Wow, This Caught Me Totally Off-Guard...

As you know, it's my company's 10th anniversary today.

And during this time, I'm taken back to how it all transpired a decade ago, and I certainly can't believe how FAST 10 years have gone by so quickly.

In fact, I remember when I first got online -- this was before I had my own domain at SuccessDoctor.com. I've had my own website for YEARS before I incorporated and registered the domain, but at that time it was on a free web host. (Ahem, remember Geocities?)

One of the very FIRST ezines I was subscribed to at the time was from my friend (and another top copywriter) Paul Myers. I think it was back in, um, 94 or 95? Hmm, can't remember, now.

But it was since that time I knew that newsletters and delivering "how to" information on the web were BIG.

It All Began When...

... I was ONLINE since, oh, '83 on pre-Internet bulletin board services (also known as BBS). While in high school, I was playing online role-playing games with my trusty 300-baud modem and a very slow line-text browser on my Radio Shack 64K computer.

(But boy oh boy, did I have FUN!)

When I quit my job working for a hair transplant surgeon and became a self-employed freelancer back in '91, I was writing copy primarily for the cosmetic surgery niche. And part of that was designing websites for them, as far back as '92, on this NEW thing called...

... The "Internet."

In those days, the Internet was made up of these tiny directory sites, which later became "malls" and such. For me, I simply looked at them as a digital form of yellow pages.

Since I was helping doctors with marketing their practices (and a big part of that was WRITING COPY for yellow-page ads, too), I said to myself, "Hey, why not?" So I jumped on the Internet and offered THAT as part of my package of copy and consulting services.

Eventually, I registered "The Success Doctor, Inc." (and later my first domain at SuccessDoctor.com) on this very day, EXACTLY 10 years ago, on August 17, 1997.

Since that day, I have registered, created, and wrote copy for several HUNDREDS of websites, including my blog at:

How An Accidental Discovery Opened My Eyes

Less than five years ago, I was a contributor to, and later acquired, a business called "The Copy Doctor" from my friend and top DIRECT RESPONSE copywriter Bob Serling.

The premise of the site was to EXPOSE actual copy critiques done on people's copy. (Which were initially in written or audio format, and delivered as a paid newsletter.)

One day, while at a seminar, someone said something while on stage that really HIT me. Hard. He said to the crowd:

With every seminar I attended, I was hearing more and more speakers saying the very same thing while on stage. I kicked myself because that's when I realized:

"This is VALUABLE stuff! I should be charging for this."
