Default Your Top 7 Copywriting Influences - 05-10-2008, 10:43 AM

Who have been the top 7 (or less) copywriting influences in your career?

Here's the 7 who have influenced me the most:
  1. Brian Keith Voiles
  2. Clayton Makepeace
  3. Daniel Levis
  4. Gary Halbert
  5. Joe Sugarman
  6. John Carlton
  7. Michel Fortin
Disclaimer: I've only been at it for 9 months and have not read "Breakthrough Advertising" yet.

In no particular order (save #1):
  1. Ogilvy
  2. Caples
  3. Reeves
  4. Kennedy (John not Dan)
  5. Hopkins
  6. Halbert
  7. Lasker
So many more are worth noting, that it's almost impossible to stick with just seven (Bencivenga, Schwartz, Carlton, Makepeace... ). The thing is, every writer who actually creates his or her own work brings something different to the table; so if you're constantly reading new copy, it's possible to be influenced by even the newest writer's style. Just my opinion, of course

Jessalynn,

Think of those guys as "icing on the cake".

I mostly write e-mail copy so my influences in that area include:

1.) Jay White
2.) Frank Kern
3.) Harlan Kilstein
4.) Jason Moffatt
5.) Matt Furey

Others:

6.) Herschell Gordon Lewis (for both sales letters and catalog copy)
7.) Ted Nicholas

Honorable mentions to Mr. Subtle, for lessons in pithisizing and design, and Jason Leister, for instruction in how to market copywriting services.
