Default Find the Fatal Flaw Contest - Dan Kennedy's Newsletter - 06-15-2007, 11:38 PM

In last month's No BS Marketing Newsletter, Dan Kennedy's partner Bill Glazer announced a "Find the Fatal Flaw" contest for a magazine ad. Out of the thousands of subscribers to the newsletter, I was one of the few winners.

The ad was fatally flawed because it tried to sell readers on receiving a CD and attending a seminar.

Instead of a dual purpose (CD and seminar), the ad should have only pitched the CD.

The CD (and perhaps a sales letter accompanying it) could then upsell the seminar.

Regards,

-Mike

Mike,

Congrats. I was one of the winners as well.

I'm more surprised that out of 20,000 people, only 324 entered... and out of all of those, less than 1 in 10 got it right.

The real marketing lesson here is the contest itself. Let's see, I got $100 off of one of DK's products... and he doesn't sell anything for LESS than $200. And everything he sells cost him about $5 or $10 in fulfillment cost... so he'll only be making $90 of profit off of me instead of $190.

But, he's giving me a perfect reason to find something to buy from him right now. Genius.

We should be creating more contests to our own lists and more contest promotions for our clients.

Congratulations on your win too.

I always learn something from Kennedy.

That's one of the reasons why I'm making an effort to attend the chapter meetings of all of his local GKIC chapters. The ROI on time/money is worth it.

Regards,

-Mike
