Default Is Joel Comm promoting porn? - 02-25-2007, 09:00 AM

I was doing some surfing on Joel's website this morning and found a link with the word "webcam" attached. When I clicked on it, I got a little surprise.

It took me to a porn site. Sure, it was a mild page compared to some, but I got a pretty good laugh out of it. I'm just wondering if Joel even knows what links he is promoting by using his script.

Something Joel might consider using is Michel Fortin's very own "ContextCash" script. This way he can pick and choose whatever link he wants to promote instead of relying on others to feed his system. His links will all be relevent and he'll have full control of his content.

If you decide to visit ContextCash, be sure to check out the demo video midway through the page (second video down the page). It shows how it all works.

Just so you know, I have used it myself and it is extremely easy to setup and implement... great product Michel!

PS - Since you know Joel very well Michel, perhaps you might want to give him a shout and pitch your product to him. Just my two cents.

Google will probably let him know sooner or later, at least if and when a human editor might notice, and give him a warning regarding Adult content links.

This sort of thing is fairly common among big Adsense publishers who use any kind of automatic content or link systems. Porn is so insanely prolific - it will always sneak in to sites through automatic channels, even through relatively innocent keywords (like webcam) despite the intentions of the website owner.

The question (and point) is, can he do anything about it since he has no control on what links he is promoting? With the script he is using, the only way I can see him changing the link is to change what words he uses in his pages.

That's assuming he doesn't know (or the software isn't specifically choosing) what link is being promoted. It might be the link that sells (or gets clicked on) the most for that keyword.

I'm not familiar with that particular software (on Joel's site) - so I don't know. Even Michel's software might have some vulnerabilities to porn content, at least temporarily until some editor actually catches the porn being advertised. But this too is just an assumption.

My point was simply that porn can really show up all over the place - where you don't expect it - when an automatic, or semi-automatic content/link delivery system or scraper is used.

My experience is that it is very common.

Michel, Have you seen this problem with ContextCash. Since all or most content is put into a database for viewing, I would think that this wouldn't be a problem.

Am I correct in this assumption? I'd like to know.

You choose your own links. So, no, there is no vulnerability in that sense. However, a website to which you link might change without your knowledge. You can be vulnerable in that sense.

Basically - if everything is done manually on sites (links, content, etc) - then there is a much lower chance of having porn slip through. But this will severely limit the number of pages that can be built in a network (without some automatic processes).

If there are links being shown automatically on web pages, then some form of porn will likely slip through sooner than later (usually links like Joel's site) - even if "porn" keywords are carefully avoided in the content.

Google will probably shut down the Adsense on the site in question (if found), and send out a warning to remove the culprit adult links, or they may shut down the Adsense account too if the same thing keeps happening again and again.

Also, two things I've never heard any guy say:

1. I have too much money

2. I have too much porn
