Default Nightmares... with Wordpress Spam - 02-02-2007, 10:18 AM

I know this isn't a copywriting question (directly) which is why I'm putting it in "Off Topic" Discussions.

My blog at http://www.jpmaroney.net is continuously under fire with spam.

I know I'm not the only one.

But -- I've tried all the setting to prevent posts, etc. and it's not working.

I still get 30-50 or more spam comment posts a day (held in approval pending status) -- but I still have to "mark as spam" and remove them.

Now...

It's getting worse --

Some of them are somehow "sneaking by" the approval process -- and getting posted without me seeing them.

Which means I have to "manage comments" several times a day to make sure nothing embarrassing is on my site -- and delete 1-3 posts that slipped through.

Thoughts, Ideas, Suggestions?

I feel ya JP.

I had to delete over 20,000 spam comments.

I'd love to attend a spammer convention and
dropkick every one of the attendees.

Thanks, Michel... This "approach" may be out of my technical ability -- but perhaps I can get a bud of mine to help.

BTW: You've become quite the wordpress/html programmer over there, huh? Nice blog...

Jason -- I guess 20,000 means:

a) You're popular... or
b) The, er, content on your blog is attracting flies.

I just can't get that image out of my mind -- of you with your shirt undone... playing those groovy seventies riffs. You're forever branded!

Party on, Moff!

Here are a few thoughts. In WordPress, I have the following checked on my blogs.

# An administrator must approve the comment (regardless of any matches below)
# Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
# Comment author must have a previously approved comment

In addition to using the Politifier plug-in, I've occasionally used the words from its database in the blacklist box.

Hope that helps.

Regards,

-Mike
