Default Syncing my desktop and laptop - 01-03-2007, 12:10 AM

I've been trying to figure something out for a week now and thought I'd open it up to the braintrust. I'm sure someone has the answer.

I'm looking to sync up the email on my laptop with my desktop. Now I know there are backup programs that will do this, but it's not exactly what I want.

first... my email is from a POP server not an IMAP. I get my email through mozilla suite (SeaMonkey) on both machines (both XP).

Right now, whichever computer happens to check for email first will get the incoming mail, but the other one will not get it. So... I have some emails on my laptop and others on my desktop. I would like to somehow have all emails available on both machines... and I'd like it to be something automatic.

Is there anyway to do this with POP email? Is there a way to have both machines get the same emails all the time?

Hi Vin,

Check your software settings. You should have one that tells your email program to leave a copy of your email in your webmail.

Another option could be to set up an auto forward to a second email address. Set your laptop to download email from one address and your desktop to download email from the other.

Hope that helps,

Mike

See... that's the thing Mike... There is no webmail. It's pop email directly to my email program.

This one is a possibility, but it seems a pain in the a**. In the year 2007 with PDA's, Blackberries, Notebooks, Tablets and all that, shouldn't there be an easier way to share email?

Thanks though. Anyone else know anything on this?

I'm a huge fan of web-based email.
IMO, it's silly to store your email on your machine...for just some of the reasons you mention, Vin.

One of the side benefits I discovered was, when one notebook died and I went to a new machine -- remember all those serial numbers for your software ?

Well, they weren't sitting in email on my now dead computer... Made getting up to speed on a new machine MUCH faster...

Besides -- what's not to love about G giving you ads for all sorts of spam recipes when you go to clean out your spam folder?

I use Goldmine from Frontrange Solutions. It lets me have all my e-mail (plus contacts, information base, and e-mail templates) on both my desktop and laptop. I can also synchronize while on the road over the Internet, or check for new messages directly from my Laptop.

Whether I check my POP accounts on my desktop or on the road, at the end of the day I can synchronize without duplicate e-mail messages (or the same message marked unread on two machines.) It also lets me track replies against individual contacts, so I have my full account history when I need it.

I think Act! and Maximizer will let you do the same thing. I've just been using Goldmine since the early 1990's.

Best,

Justin

This is why I switched to IMAP on my e-mail accounts. I had to keep things synced between 3 computers and webmail. IMAP is the tool for the job.

I had no idea there even were hosting accounts out there that don't allow access to their e-mail accounts via both POP and IMAP. And no webmail? Are ya' kidding? Time for a new web host... you don't have the basic tools for the job there, mate, and it sounds like you really need 'em.
