Hi All,

I think that there are two different "master" positions that a copywriter
may take:

1. In his/her marketing efforts
2. In a forum such as this one as to compare him/her-self to another.

In case #1 anyone can say or claim what they want about themselves
with words such as 'master' because there are no certificate program
that is required. You don't need a degree, license etc.

In case #2 I guess you'll have to beat the control of another writer
to claim that you are 'better'.

Writers with few years of experience have beaten seasoned copywriters.
So who was 'better'?

I've seen many copywriters claim superlative titles such as:
-"world's greatest copywriter"
-"america's most highly paid copywriter" etc.

.. but this is understood in a marketing context, not as a PROVEN
fact.

It's always great when others sing your praises BUT you have to
"boast" about your work as well. Humility is a great virtue but
not when it comes to advertising your services.

I study all the great "masters of the trade". I mention them in the
salescopy for my copywriting service.

But there is ONE that I left out ... the REAL MASTER, ONLY MASTER
of Copywriting ... JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF!

Everything the other 'masters' teach are in the BIBLE!!

Even when they claim originality.

Study the life of Jesus ( and the Bible in general) and all the
copywriting principles are there.

So my only REAL MASTER is Jesus.

Give me an idea that your favorite 'master' teaches and I'll show
you it in the Bible.

Anybody up for the challenge?

So as 'great' as they are all true wisdom comes from God. So if you're not
studying the Bible you're missing out on the greatest copywriting secrets.

Kind Regards,

Ray L. Edwards,
"the gets results copywriter!"

With all due respect Raydal, your post doesn't make a bit of sense at all to me...

On one hand you say that a man should boast and on the other you say that Jesus is a master copywriter?

I'm very puzzled as I have studied the bible in the past (very extensively at one point in my life) and I can't even concieve Jesus "boasting" -- He had others doing it for him.

No disrespect here or blasphemy intended, but Jesus was more of a Multi Level Marketer than he was a copywriter...

-- if I remember right, Jesus was against any man boasting or bragging, so your theory sounds like a bunch of hogwash...

Please enlighten me and show me the error of my ways!

You shouldn't be.

He's serious... it's his belief. I never really "get it", but he doesn't mean any harm or offense. Maybe you took it as sarcasm? It isn't...

Hi Steve,

Jesus never boasted?

I think that it was C. S. Lewis that wrote that the claims that Jesus
made about Himself either made him God or the greatest lunatic
this world has ever seen. But there is no in-between.

He "boasted"

I am the ...

- light of the world. Nobody comes through God but through me
- the way the truth the life
- the bread of life
-"I AM"

Those were NOT "humble" claims. There is nothing "humble" about
claiming anything less than you really are.

Now let's see Jesus the copywriter:

Read John 4:

A woman comes to look for water.
Jesus asks for a drink but she is a Samaritan and he a Jew and they
don't mix. He talks to the woman in the language of what she
was looking for ... all his metaphors are on WATER.

As JCarlton would say ... He entered the conversation that was already
in his prospects mind.

He presents Himself as the "living water" --Solution to the problem!

And that's not copywriting? ... I beg to differ.

And that's only one case ...

Kind Regards,

Ray L. Edwards

Although I'm not offended by it personally, I do understand how others can take it this way if they don't hold on to the same beliefs.

I'm not speaking for Harlan, but I have a lot of non-Christian friends that find Chrisitanity in general very offensive...

...add to this, making off the wall statements that intertwine copywriting with Christianity.

-- from a Jewish perspective, I can understand Harlan's reaction.

-- I'm still trying to understand the correlation between Jesus and copywriting.

Ray, perhaps if you could reiterate your statement with a few examples to back your claims, you would get a better response, but blatantly making a statement like you did... well...

Hi Erik,

Thanks for your level headed response. I appreaciate that you don't
"get it" but respect my position.

Just that I look for principles in anything that I read and all TRUE
principles are found first in the Bible. I'm an ardent student of
the Bible so I often make the connection that the casual reader
may not see. (I'm not calling you a "casual reader" I don't know
you that well.)

Let me just give a few examples:

1. We talk about the importance of story telling ...
Jesus told a LOT of stories.

2. We talk about using conversational language ...
Jesus used the common language of the people. It was written that
the common people heard him gladly because he didn't speak like
the Scribes ( more educated class)

3. We talk about aksing questions to engage the prospects..
Jesus asked a LOT of questions.

And the list goes on.

All I'm trying to say is that you can learn a lot as a copywriter
by studying the way he dealt with people.

It wasn't my intention to offend anyone.

Kind Regards,

Ray L.,

OK Ray - I see your point here, but never really looked at it as boasting before. In fact, here is somthing for you to ponder:

Jeremiah 9:23 (NIV)
23 This is what the LORD says:
"Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom
or the strong man boast of his strength
or the rich man boast of his riches...

I guess it's easy to use any scripture out of context...

... I also think the word, "boast" is a poor choice of words. Here is what Dictionary.com tells me about this word:

4 entries found for boast.
boast1 ( P ) Pronunciation Key (bst)
v. boast·ed, boast·ing, boasts
v. intr.
To glorify oneself in speech; talk in a self-admiring way.

v. tr.
To speak of with excessive pride.
To possess or own (a desirable feature): “ [the] capital of a region in the southeast that boasts bountiful coal fields” (US Air).
To contain; have.

n.
The act or an instance of bragging.
A source of pride.

Ray - maybe it's just me, but boasting is a word i would use to describe arrogance.

I think that we are on the same page just that we look at "boasting"
in different ways.

Man have nothing to boast about but God does. What would be
"arrogant" for a man to say, God can.

Note that the text you referenced has 'negative boasting' and
'positive boasting'.
