Default Are they asking me to drive too far for training? - 02-17-2006, 05:01 PM

Folks,

I just accepted an outside sales job (my first sales job), and my boss-to-be wants to get me together (for 3 days) with a great salesman with 15 yrs. experience in what I'll be doing.

The problem is this: he works 180 miles away (approx. 3.5-4 hrs. drive time). I'm not sure if the guy plans on me staying in town for 3 days or if I'm expected to drive back and forth; the plans are still somewhat unconfirmed.

What kind of compensation should I ask for in exchange for this kind of setup? Motel costs (if need be)? Gas (I figure it's about $100 or so to go back and forth for 3 days)? In addition to pay for the training itself? Or is this simply an unreasonable request on his part? Or am I being unreasonable and this is standard practice?

Thanks,
Alex Stiner

I really can't imagine that they're expecting you to drive eight hours a day round trip for three days in a row, so they must be expecting you to stay there. Why don't you ask them what they have in mind? I think they should at least pay for a motel.

I did ask, of course, but like I said-- it's still being discussed. Nothing's really final, so I'm not getting any feedback that's firm yet.

Your expenses should be compensated, at a minimum.

If they're not willing to do that, then I would see that as a red flag.

Default As a minimum... - 02-19-2006, 01:48 AM

I'd expect to be paid:
  • Hotel costs.
  • Meal expenses.
  • Mileage for my auto expenses, or at the very least money for gas.

And I'm with John - if you don't get that as a minimum, show them your backside.

OK, so I'm not being too whiny. Good to see my common-sense radar is still working properly

Thanks for the feedback, all. I'll see what he says this week.
