Default Uncle Sam Paid Me a Visit - 09-21-2005, 10:11 AM

My uncle's name is Sam.

No joke.

He came and visited me a few weeks ago.

I didn't know he was president of a $600 Billion dollar bank and had over 3,000 people working for him.

I've never had much contact with him. But that might change now

Anyway, I asked him to give me some advice I could share with a collegue who has a very high turnover in his company.

Uncle Sam's words of wisdom were so simple.

He took a sip of water, neatly placed it back on the table, sighed and put his hands under his chin. He then looked at me, took a deep breath and said...

'If you do 2 things, you will keep your people. Treat them well and pay them well. Everything else is BS"

I think should make that into a bumper sticker.

Sammer (is that a Texan way to say Sam Jr.?)

Just teasing...

Thanks for sharing, it's good advice, and something I wholeheartedly agree with - I went by the same simple principles when I had a handful of employees. It's all about treating others with respect.

What goes around comes around sooner or later.

BTW - that story would make a fantastic sales letter opener - save it for a rainy day.

You know what Tim, I might just do that. I'm thinking along the lines of human relations, HR or something similar. Where did your hot picture go? :P

turnover is not bad if it is the non performers

Well he told me in his tenure there, hes never fired anyone except two people back in 1992 when they tried to defraud the bank of $83 million dollars in an elaborate trader scheme. But thats the point, he prided himself on treating and paying his guys great. Obviously not every single one of the 3,000 he knew personally, but as a general rule, this worked well for him.
