Default Cat Food? - 07-27-2008, 07:31 PM

We just adobpted a cat from the SPCA. It's a fat lazy cat, something for the kids and that can love on me all day while I'm at home working .

Anyways, I went to PetSmart and just as any good marketer would do, I automated everything. You know... electric cat poop picker upper thing, etc.

I made the mistake of not buying the automated water thing because I didn't see it until I got home. It's only like 60$ but I don't have to water the cat everyday.

The only thing that's killin' me is the food issue. I bought some Purina One dry cat food and my cat is NOT feelin' this stuff. I bought some Turkey and Rice canned cat food and he killied it.

My question is, does any cat people here ONLY feed the canned stuff? I'm thinking of feeding my cat this:

Amazon.com: Natural Balance Ultra Formula Cat Food (24/6-oz cans): Kitchen & Dining

But when I travel, he'll have to eat the dry food.

Any tips or suggestions?

I have two cats, and we mainly feed them canned food. Sometimes I'll add dry food to the automatic feeder so they can nibble all day long, but they prefer the wet food.

Find out what they were feeding your cat at the shelter. That may solve the problem.

Ricky,

I've had cats most of my life. Every one of them liked a different flavor and type of cat food.

The problem with wet foods is they can start turning bad after they have been in the bowl for a while. Then your cat won't want to eat it.

Dry food is better as they will still eat it in the afternoon even if you put it down in the morning for them.

The other thing is try to stick with healthier brands like Iams and Eukenuba. They tend to have less filler in them.

Mike

Now that was funny.

I own a cat... and I usually try to buy food for it at the local health food store. Sure, you can buy some at your local supermarket, but it typically won't be nearly as healthy for your cat. (It will probably contain fillers, chemicals, etc.)

Also, I do recommend that you snag a pet fountain over at Amazon.com. Our cat won't even drink unless the water is running... so a pet fountain really saves the day. (Actually, there are many cats who will only drink running water).

And due to the fact that many cats will only drink running water, they often suffer from dehydration. (Yet another reason to buy a pet fountain).

Additionally, because of their dehydration problem you may be better off feeding your cat canned food since that type of food contains a lot more moisture for them.

Hope this helps,

When we had cats, our vet recommended not feeding wet food except as a treat...said that the wet stuff wasn't good for their teeth and led to increased cases of diabetes.

Of course, he also wanted us to feed them $30 bags of food!

We listened on the canned food and only bought it occasionally, but didn't go with the dry food recommendation because being students at the time (well hubby was a student, I was working retail) we couldn't afford it.

Yes, you've got to watch the type of food that you feed cats. We do the canned food because they have feline leukemia and swallowing is becoming a bit of a challenge for them.

Certain foods in cats can lead to kidney disorders. I'd ask a vet. I've heard that Iams and Science Diet are good.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I gave the cat to my assistant this morning. It didn't work out, I found out I actually have to feed the cat everyday. It was a deal breaker. And it would have been to expensive to fly someone to my house from India to do it so I gave up.

Here in Australia we just let our cats roam free and feast upon the local endangered wildlife.

Its automation at its finest.

Our two farm cats (and now 11 kittens) get a pile of dry food each day. We buy the bag at the dollar store that says "Cat Food." It also says "100% Satisfaction Guaranteed.". What more could a marketer ask for?

They know by now that if they don't eat it, they're on their own to go hunt for mice. They get a little bowl of milk every so often, but otherwise they drink pond or puddle water. Farm cats were born with automation in mind.

The one is so damn cool I often tell my wife "I love that dog."

Regards,
Lance
