Default Word 2007 Help - 07-06-2008, 08:02 PM

There's a simple solution to this problem, but I can't seem to find it.

I am conducting research as I'm working, like I usually do. I need access to the word count as I'm working. Something strange happened this time. When I returned to my document, the tool bar at the top kept "hiding" and I couldn't see the word count. There's no status bar at the bottom of the page. I'm not sure what I did, but every time I go to Word Help, it says it automatically displays the words.

I've closed the document and reopened it--no word count.

What's the simple solution to this problem?

Never mind.

After an hour of messing with this document, I finally got the status bar to reappear.

It sounds obsessive, but I'm doing article marketing for a client, and word count is very important.

Speaking of office 2007, is anyone else using it? I'm in love with it.

Anyone using the new version of OneNote? It's totally awesome!

Deb, do you know what happened to make it all re-appear or disappear in the first place? The only thing I could come up with to make match those "symptoms" was click 'Full Screen Reading' on the 'View' tab, but that doesn't sound like what you had going on.

Eric, Yes and Yes. The new "Ribbon" took some getting used to, and some people have just hated having all the menus and shortcut keys moved away from where they used to be. One guy hated it all so much, he created a tool that added all the Office 2003 menus and shortcuts back to the 2007 version--it was one of the most downloaded internal tools for awhile.

And yeah, OneNote rocks. Just. Plain. Rocks.

Actually, I love Office 2007. I've been using it for more than a year now. There are a lot of great features on it.

Elron, I'm not quite sure what I did. I dragged the document down and then when I brought it back up, it had a different look to it--transparent at the top/no status bar at the bottom. I kept clicking at the bottom to find the status bar. After an hour, I double clicked at the top and the look of the document changed again.

Other than that mishap, I've happy with Office 2007 overall. I don't like, however, that it defaults to Callibri 11 point font. With the Page Setup, unless you click on 0 (zero) in "Before" and "After," you'll get some really funky spacing on the page. It defaults to some strange spacing, so you have to change the default settings.

Otherwise, MSO 2007 is great.

Hmm, then I think you discovered a hidden "feature" or something, Deb. Glad you got it working again.

With the default font and spacing, if I'm understanding you correctly, you can change those in the document template so you don't have to manually set them each time.

Search in the help system for 'Set the default font' and 'Change the Normal template (Normal.dotm)'. This would be if you have a generic need for all your documents to have the same style settings, including default font and spacing.

If you're talking more about different style combinations for different documents, look into applying and creating "Quick Styles," which is one of my favorite new features in Word 2007, much better than the old approach to styles and templates. Just search 'quick styles' in the help.

I hope I'm talking to the same issues you are, and hope that helps save you time in the long run.

(But if you have gripes about Vista, 'fraid I won't be able to help, apart from adding them to my own list of gripes.)

Yes, I've got everything in order as far as spacing is concerned. I took care of that right away. It just makes me wonder why they chose Callibri 11 as the default and why the funky spacing was the original default setting.

I have Vista too. No complaints about that.

Deb
