Repeat message from copywriters forum from Orange Alan

Guys

Just got this little message

"Hi Alan,

Just wanted to say "Thanks" for the great referral. Miss Spelling did a great job for me and turned it around very quickly.

Really a pleasure to work with!

Mike Mathewson"

We all need proofreaders so though I'd share her domain with you all.

She is cool and does a great job, great price, fast turnaround!

Alan:

Honest-to-god I'm not trying to start something... but I checked out Miss Spelling's site and quickly noticed a number of grammar/syntax errors that, ironically, a proofreader should have caught. Even the sample paragraph that she "proofs" has a pretty major error.

I definitely wouldn't hire a proofreader who didn't have an error-free site.

Just throwing it out there. (BTW, I have proofread professionally since 1990, so I have a little experience here.)

I noticed the errors, too.

SO funny.

I have been to her office and shot her dead!

LOVE IT!

ORANGE EDIT

Okay here's the deal.

I have used proofreaders for years. Frankly they drive me NUTS!

Why?

They are far too well trained for my liking.

They over use, over do and remove way to much persoanlity from the copy.

I am a mad eccentric scotsman. When I write I want a proofreader that understands that.

Proofreaders always want to strip it away and turn it into an English essay.

For me ... DRIVES ME NUTS!

So I use Miss Spelling for two reasons.

1. She keeps all the good stuff in (you know the stuff that gets my copy selling like CRAZY!)

2. She has a fast turnaround and I have NEVER had one issue with her work with ONE client.

So ...

If you want copy with as much personality as a chess player wearing a checked shirt, dirty chinos, old nikes, bottle bottom spectacles and with testicles hanging around his knees ... do not use miss spelling.

If you want copy that sells like mine does, you know ... $1,2 million from one letter ... USE miss spelling!

What else can I say, yes ... I am truly orangely amazing!

Love to all.

Alan

sorry, I wanted just to be the first to quote this

Alan,

You're so funny!

Don't lump all the proofreaders into one boring category! I'm an English teacher, and I love it when I get something original, eccentric, and downright on-the-edge of propriety! Most English teachers I know are quite saucy; we just want those doggone commas in the correct places.

Alan -- so, are you suggesting that it is due to your proofreader that your letters are successful? Or is it because you write great copy?

That's a bit like saying Tiger Woods is successful because he has a great caddy. I mean, I'm sure it helps... but if he ain't hitting the ball where it's supposed to go...

Like Deb, I love edgy, personality-laden copy... but I don't think it's asking too much for a professional proofreader to catch a period at the end of a sentence... especially in the one sample she gives of her work.

That's all I'm saying.

Hello Class

GREAT to be riding the board,

Absolutely loving these waters the sharks are thin!

Ever heard the expression about people in glass houses ...?

That is right! They should not throw stones... or get changed with the lights on!

Jim, thanks for your comments - however on having a quick look at your site I noticed several errors - I can go into detail if you like or give you a very reasonable quote .

Hey guys c'mon - we all know as writers the hardest thing to do is check out our own 'swing'.

And just remember ... "It don't mean a thing- if you aint got that swing..."

Jim

First thing ... YES I AM A GREAT WRITER! How do I know? I tell myself everyday, it seems to work!

I create the masterpiece, they simply clean it when I have done!

Now I have never seen how low your testicles hang and do you wear check shirts. Do you wear chinos … I dunno!

I have no idea but I have been through your webpage and within a few paragraphs I noticed TWO SPELLING MISTAKES and at least one syntax error that is blatantly obvious to a hairy Scotsman like myself.

Now here is a word I know and it's "WEIRD"

How do I know? People call me weird because I am weird!

But you spell it on your webpage like ... "WIERD" Is that right?

I have a suggestion for you …

Call Miss Spelling she is very good, rates are reasonable

LOVE IT!

Hey ... we are writers, we all do it

With all due respect to you both, I never suggested that my site was 100% error free.

I merely suggested that of all people, somebody who is offering proofreading services should proofread their page. Especially on their lone proofreading sample. (Although I'm assuming you'll leave it as is out of spite. )

Miss S... if I had a proofreading site, then your "glass houses" quip would be warranted.

But I don't.

Nitpicking my spelling seems a bit petty, as people are not being referred to my site because I'm an expert in spelling.

Bottom line is that if I'm trying to decide between two proofreaders... all things being equal, I'm going to pick the cleanest site.

And I would guess that most others would agree... honestly, I'm just trying to help.

Sorry if my intentions have been misunderstood.

Regards,

Jim Gratiot
