Yes, but they're a half million of your closest friends. Seriously though, social networks overpromised and underdelivered .....turning into
a stalker in the process.
Mistaking mechanical access for social influence, many of the participants couldn't care less about the social capital real social networks run on. Any possible
working model gets forgotten in the
built to flip goldrush.
What's it for? How is it used? It's used to get an Initial Public Offering (or bought before then by Yahoo, Google, MSN) and in the meantime create an excuse to expose you to ads.
Any marketer could do a better job with their own house list, but the idea is simple. Social networks often get you a hot job (before it goes on the market). ...the cool hunters and thought leaders tell you what's coming trendwise, or a bargain you didn't know about. ....and social contacts can be natural joint venture partners.
Working social networks are like a brilliant, influential friend. Which is why you're wondering what on earth these 'things' are supposed to do.
However, like computer 'enabled' anything, these services have about as much to do with human social networks as fish have to do with bicycles.
