Default How to get portfolio on website - 05-30-2008, 04:21 PM

I am not even going to pretend I am any good at graphics, web design or anything related. I am a writer and that is it, lol. I am trying to get my portfolio onto my website. I have a lot in Word and would really like to show it off like I've seen on some sites. For example, if you click on Portfolio on Bob Bly's site (and many others, this is just an example) you get an actual picture of the brochure. Bob Bly - Professional copywriter and marketing communications expert.

How would I do that?

Thanks,

Traci

Whatever software or service you use, upload the image of the brochure and scale it to fit the thumbnail page then make the "thumbnail" a link to the actual image.

Regarding Bob Bly. Oh my gosh. I know the guy has written a decent book and is supposedly America's best copywriter but his home page is a classic example of let me tell you about me. I guess it works for him but if I was looking for copywriters that page would totally turn me off. I wish him the best.

Hi Traci,

If you just want thumbnail images of the copy you've written you could try the following...

  • View the document in Word at say a 50% zoom level
  • Hit the "Print Screen" key on your keyboard which saves your screen image to the clipboard (or ALT+Print Screen to capture just the open Word window).
  • Open an image editing program like Photoshop, Photoshop Express (it's free!), or even MS paint (anything that'll let you crop and do basic image editing).
  • Hit CTRL+V to paste the image into the program
  • Crop out what you don't want and then save the image of your document as a .jpg or .gif to use on your website.
  • Insert the image into your webpage and make the image clickable.
I do this (everything except step 1 here) for thumbnails of the websites in my portfolio and it's pretty easy once you've done it once or twice. If you need any help or get stuck trying this out, let me know and I'll give you a hand.

Steve

I thought the same thing, vdmp! I guess his reputation is so great, he doesn't really need to bother with the site.

As for getting a portfolio online, Steve has some good advice. I've also designed my own ads with a cheap editing program when one particular client wouldn't give me clips.

If you're not confident in your ability to paste something together, perhaps you know of someone who would trade copywriting for graphic design services. You could also try asking around at a local college.

I really believe your website is essential to your success! As a consumer, my first question is always, "Do you have a website?" I judge that company or individual based on my first impression of their website.

An effective website is the bottom line for any good copywriter! It also helps if it's nice to look at too. <smile>

Do you want to get a PRINT portfolio up there? If so, can you convert ads you have into pdf?

Do you have a website at all? Do you have a host account with fantastico?

If you have nothing, then maybe taking a word doc and putting a table of contents and making a pdf with samples would be the way to go at first. Then you just have to make one page, the landing page, with a link to the pdf.

Meanwhile you could be developing those pages and link them up once you are done.

Here's how I do mine if that helps. Some clients want to see it broken down by category so I added the client list version. It's been very popular with clients. You know if they sell bath mats, they want to see if you have bath mat experience. Because we all know you can't possibly get up to speed on bath mats without prior experience.
