Default Site Built It - 04-11-2008, 11:06 PM

So what about it? I just checked them out and watched their 30 minute video. Sounds like a great system to help a beginner get his foot in the door of an internet business.

Anybody have experience with them?

It's been a few years since I used their system but it's still overpriced. Their email system was god-awful... they would limit the number of email I could send out to anyone at once (i.e. sending a note out to a bunch of friends) but there was ZERO spam filter. So every piece of spam landed in my in-box.

It took them 3 years to remove their name as the registrar for that domain name of mine. So everytime I had to move that domain to a new hosting company, I had to call Site Build It to get them to change the DNS settings so my site would be online. Big pain in the a$$ to say the least.

Seriously, you're better off learning how to create a basic webpage, especially if you're writing any online copy.

Here's what I recommend:

1. Grab webdesign software. I'm partial to Dreamweaver but many others like FrontPage or even XSitePro. That's your most expensive investment. I bit the bullet early and got the full Macromedia (it's now Adobe) web design package with Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and the works.

2. Sign up for a monthly membership at lynda.com for $25/month. Use their video training to learn how to use your web design software.

3. Grab a hosting company that offers a Cpanel. That way, many of the cool apps like WordPress are just a one-click install. A lot of IMers like HostGator.

I've been very happy with Lunar Pages and Hosting Zoom (their Failover One plans) for hosting. Head over to webhostingtalk.com for current customer reviews of different hosting companies.

If you get into having multiple sites, then look into getting a reseller account instead of a standard hosting account.

4. Grab a free copy of WebCEO and use it for your basic SEO tweaks & submissions. There's other SEO tips and tricks you can do but that's another LONG thread for some point in the future.

Good luck,

Mike

Ken Evoy, the founder of Site Build It, is one of the most experienced Internet marketers around, and any of his e-books, newsletters etc are well worth reading. I studied all his stuff in great detail in the early days of my Internet marketing career.

I was tempted to try Site Build It a few years ago but figured it's better to learn to build my own sites, while still using all the knowledge gained by reading Evoy's books.

I know a few people who have done well with Site Build It sites. If you follow the guidelines, and choose the right niche and write plenty of keyword-focused content for your site, then you should get plenty of search engine traffic and build a viable business.

But I'm now leaning towards Wordpress sites as a better option than Site Build It. With a cPanel host you can install Wordpress in a few clicks, add a nice theme and you're ready to go.

Thank you for the responses. As usual, if it sounds too good to be true, yada yada yada.

Ken Evoy is a really really sharp marketer. I own every one of his ebooks that he's ever sold. One underrated ebook of his is Make Your Words Sell which he co-wrote with copywriter Joe Robson. It's a great buy for marketers trying to learn how to write a basic good salesletter.

Head over sitesell.com and you can grab a few of the older ones like Make Your Site Sell for free. You'll find them through the site map.

But the Site Build It was not a good experience for me.

I've had good experience with SBI. I've owned a few SBI sites... This was early on, so a lot of the functionality that is there now, wasn't there (like actually being able to UPLOAD web pages). So for me, that got old. That's why I didn't renew.

But that's not the case now. The amount of stuff they keep adding is pretty cool. More value, same price.

And yes, the price is high, but SBI is more about VALUE.

It just depends on what your priorities are.

I'm a tech geek, but I still found it EXTREMELY convenient to be able to login and see everything in ONE place. Otherwise, I'd get sidetracked "setting up this system or that system."

And for MOST people who aren't tech savvy and don't really care about becoming tech savvy, it really is their best bet for actually making money online... the slow and steady way.

You might spend some time on Steve Pavlina's blog reading about SBI.

He's a recent user/convert/affiliate and he's written a lot about it.
