Default What Do You Look For in a Copywriter - 04-08-2008, 07:55 AM

Hello Everyone,

I've been wanting to break into online copywriting for a while now. I've written a couple of online sales letters for people, and a couple of landing pages for Early to Rise, but I'm ready to go after the "Big Guns" of Internet Marketing. I'm building a list of top marketers, and I've got a letter I think will work, but what do those guys really look for in a copywriter?

What are their hot buttons? Their concerns? Will they hire a relative newbie like me? I don't have a proven track record yet, can't show how much money something I've written has made yet, but I know I can do the work if I'm just given the chance.

How should I approach these people?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

James

Hi James,

I wouldn't worry as much about finding the "Big Guns". Chances are, if you're what they are looking for, they will find you... usually by word of mouth or maybe meeting you at a marketing seminar.

It's been my experience that many times, there's people at the event as attendees who are making more money than some of the speakers. They just choose to stay out of the guru limelight.

Your portfolio is one of your biggest tool for getting clients. Focus on adding pieces to it and removing your previous efforts that did not perform as well.

Don't be in a rush to get to $5K, $10K, or higher in fees until you have the skills and expertise to justify those types of prices. The types of clients who will pay $5K and up are already pretty savvy marketers themselves. They may be fairly good at writing copy as well.

You aren't going to be able to "fake it until you make it" with them.

The more you charge, the higher the stakes to deliver good or even great copy.

At the risk of hurting your feelings, I would suggest you work on building stronger marketing skills.

If you aren't sure how to reach your ideal prospects... that's a marketing issue.

If you aren't sure what makes them buy... that's a marketing issue.

Solve these marketing issues and you will have plenty of qualified prospects coming your way.

Hope that helps,

Mike

Hi James,

When looking for a copywriter, there's a few things I look out for:

1) Proven track record. Has he or she produced outstanding results in the past, consistently?

2) Style. I like a writing style that's semi in-ya-face, something that gets the readers blood flowing and has humor.

3) Stories. I respect copywriters who can deliver an enticing story, there's no better way to pull your readers in.

4) Price. Will I be able to make my money back plus some if I use him or her for my sales copy.

Hope this helps.
Brent

The first thing you can do right now is whip out a headline for your sales copy, seriously.
