Default Vince McMahon - Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame... - 03-19-2008, 01:13 PM

While I doubt Vince will ever get the "Nice Business Guy Of The Year" Award, him getting a star on the Walk of Fame is pretty amazing considering where he started from 40 years ago running a wrestling promotion with his father.

I remember being a 12 year-old kid, watching McMahon's WWWF, every Sunday morning at 12 midnight on WOR, channel 9 out of New York City. Vince Jr. was the ringside announcer and the guy that interviewed the wrestlers. His most innovative marketing trick at the time was probably putting Andre the Giant stand on a box, so he appeared to be even that much taller. Greats like Ernie Ladd, would spout off things like, "McMahon! I'm 6'9" tall and weigh over 300lbs, I walk and talk and do whatever I want to around here!"

But after Vince Sr. passed on, Vince Jr. unleashed a flurry of marketing weaponry that changed the face of professional wrestling. Gone were all the independent promotions and alliances, spread from one end of the country to the other. Vince consolidated those that allowed to be consolidated, those that didn't were run over by the then WWF, marketing machine.

By innovating and applying a variety of marketing techniques Vince Jr. became a power-player in the world of entertainment.

The best definition of entrepreneur that I know of?

"An entrepreneur is someone that something of low value and transforms it into something of higher value."

And the way entrepreneurs do that is through innovation and marketing-- Just like Vince McMahon Jr. has done.

It's hard to argue with results, but I can sure argue that the WWE is "something of higher value". I do appreciate his giving the unwashed masses exactly what they want. And I've made a few bucks investing in WWE in the past.

The plain truth is...

Any famous person who puts together a trust that guarantees the 5K+ yearly fees are paid, can get a star. It's kind of a sham.

That's why some of the biggest stars ever don't have stars on the walk. They refuse to play the game(or pay the game).

In the Halcyon days of Hollywood, the yearly upkeep fees were often paid by studios or fan clubs. But in the last 30 years (much more prevalent in the last 10) any celebrity who has a slumping career... a new project coming out... and enough money to pay, gets a star.

Hope they didn't put him by Bogart or Hepburn. I guess when they put Erik Estreda in all bets were off.
