Default Cliche of the month - "You get what you pay for" - 01-17-2008, 02:34 AM

hi Y'all,

I've just created a new blog for advertisers and marketers. with an opportunity to comment on the featured article and share your thoughts with your fellow readers. New articles are posted about every ten days or so.

The current article is first in the series: "Cliche Of The Month".

Cliches are expressions that have been used so often that they've lost their impact or make your sales ad copy seem predictable.

They have a negative effect in on your sales literature. They are all too general in scope and do not conjure up that strong specific effect on the reader's psyche.

This month we explore the familiar "you get what you paid for" used by copywriters and marketers in attempt to justify a higher price. By itself it is second to "quality" as being a vague and impotent expression.

The article introduces more specific variations based on this familiar theme.
Each tailored to a specific type of product or service.

For example, "You pay peanuts, you get monkeys." means that if you want to hire workers who will most likely perform to your expectations, you need to pay them a better wage than what they might earn working for your competitors. This way you can afford to be more selective in your hiring and those you select will feel better rewarded.

As you read through the list, you will see that whenever it occurs to you to use a familiar expression, think of alternative expressions that are tailored to your particular marketing subject matter.

Notice how such alternate expressions can power up your sales copy.
