Does anyone have any links to solid evidence that a .com name will market better than the other extensions?

What have your experiences been?

I have no evidence other than EVERYONE says .com is the bees knees.

It's the default extension people type in.
It's the first you try if you're not sure.
Most people probably don't understand the difference.
