Default Postcard Delirium - 01-02-2007, 08:43 PM

So is a jumbo postcard better than a regular size? (I know it depends on the offer, but say both cards are solid)

Neither are great I know, but what is your experience with size and ROI?

This is for lead generation only.

thanks

Paul

I'd go for the larger(est) postcard if I were in your business. If you have a bulk mail permit, then sending out an oversized postcard will cost you about the same as sending out a normal 4 x 6 postcard first class.

The price difference print-wise between a normal 4 x 6 card and some weird size...like a 6 x 11 card is only about 6 1/2 cents each on runs of 2500.

A 6 x 11, 4 over 4 postcard printed on 16pt stock and UV coated will definitely stand out in the handful of mail your potential customer gets everyday...and it will give you a ton of room for your pitch/offer.

For strictly lead generation purposes, I don't think it's necessary to send out oversized postcards...nor do I feel UV coating is necessary.

Since the average person doesn't receive postcards everyday, a regular plain Jane postcard that's neatly printed will do just fine.

I gotta disagree with Dale here about receiving postcards. Maybe I'm an oddball, but I (or my husband) get postcards in the mail just about every day. Most of them are oversize. The most common pitches are for internet/cable/telephone services or retail stores. I rarely give them a second glance. Now, I do favor oversize ones myself as a copywriter, because it gives me lots more room to make my pitch, as Mr. Subtle said. On the other hand, a regular size one might just stand out more, since I get so few of those.

I would suggest you collect a bunch from your own mail delivery plus friends' mail delivery, and see how they look visually. Then make sure yours looks very different visually. For instance, the postcards I seem to get are all glossy, use primarily blue as a main color, and are oversize. To go against the crowd, I'd send one on plain, uncoated cardstock in neon pink with very minimal design and very basic typesetting. It goes without saying the headline will be a grabber and the offer will be prominent.

Eileen:

What did you say differently that I didn't say?

I said NOT to use oversize postcards.

I said NOT to use UV coated postcards.

I said use a regular size, plain Jane, neatly printed postcard.

So, what exactly are you disagreeing with?

Is there a big/any difference in ROI with bulk compared to a stamp?

Does the post office still "misplace" bulk?

I was rambling ... but what I disagreed with, in particular, was that the average person doesn't receive many postcards. We get them every single day, usually several.

On a postcard...NO.

I haven't heard of any mailing being dumped in over 10 years.

Also, you're welcome to send out plain-Jane laser printed vellum bristol postcards if you want, but judging from the home you have featured on your website, your target audience will be put off looking at a cheaply produced mailing.

That's my home and the mortgage is due!

It seems postcards have changed. I have a lot of marketing stuff that says "postcards as a last resort"...that is what I get for listening to them old Kennedy recordings

I want nice cards

Any advice on where to shop?

You're making a huge mistake, but it's your money!

In either case, I'm backing away.
