Great scan, Michael - yep that's the one I just got this past week myself, if memory serves... it Did get opened, and into the swipe file... nothing like "mystery handwritten letters" to get opened...

here's a funny idea, maybe for ones addressed to men's names, they should have a woman's lipstick/kiss on the back side of it, to seal it... I know I'd open that for sure.. (or my wife surely would lol) ... that would ensure 100% opened.. though the disappointment of opening it an it's non-personal, might drop conversions... worth a test! (and/or spraying them w/perfume)..

it's all about getting the dang thing opened... then hitting them with a USP pitch they respond to... lead-gen free offers etc

I posted this link about mailings on another thread, and Mr. Subtle suggested I add it here. It's from Robert Middleton's blog. I really like RM, his content is very good and he is very ethical. Here's the link:

The More Clients Blog: The Mailing Challenge

This is Part 1. Part 2 is already up and you can access it through the links to the right.

Hope this is helpful!

Hey Mike...I actually used this exact template for a piece that I did a few years ago when I was marketing consulting/copywriting services...it was a bit of work, but it worked extremely well! I don't have stats...but if I do find the piece, Ill post it here...this could easily be used to pitch for a free report selling consulting services (which is what I was doing - using Dan's Magnetic Marketing speech as the offer) or whatever...and I didn't even know what I was doing...lol

If I remember correctly, I used the Who's Mailing What Archives to send me an original piece - just can't remember the company - and I totally ripped it with my own copy. Its just funny how the template is an almost an exact replica here...

Cool stuff....!

This morning I received the postcard below from a major heating oil company in the area. These guys have 4 offices and many heating oil trucks. They are not a mom and pop operation.

It's the kind of postcard some in here will probably get wood on...the ones who believe printing postcards in black toner off their laser printer on Wausau Astrobright Lift Off Lemon 65# cover is the way to go.

Here's the front of it:

I removed the company name, phone number and locations in order to save them any embarrassment. Also, forgive my quick scan which shows the card looking yellow instead of a bright lime green (Lift Off Lemon).

Here's the back of the postcard:

Note the powerful headline, the compelling copy and the irresistible offer.

In my "It's ALIVE!" thread I mentioned that direct mail is still booming with opps. If you're new to direct marketing, scanning your junk mail is a good place to get leads. You're not going to get $2500.00 for a postcard, but $500 for a few hours work isn't bad either. Plus if the postcard effort involves (writing) a "special report," then you're looking at an even bigger paycheck.

I'm constantly amazed at all the crap direct mail multi-million dollar companies send out.

Oh man, I love it!

You're right though Subtle, ones mailbox can be a great source of copywriting prospects like this who obviously don't have a clue what they're doing and can use all the help they can get. I'm off to check mine now and see if I got the same postcard!

Got this postcard yesterday from my favorite local Joe Polish grad:

It's laser printed on Lift-Off Lemon (even though my scan looks like yellow) 67# vellum bristol. As usual, this kind of card took a real beating going through the mail even though it went through just one main post office (about a 20 mile total trip).

If it was formatted better and printed (in full color) on 16pt coated stock it would convey some of the "quality" this guy is trying to PIKE about his carpet cleaning.

It's funny that his website isn't even up and running even though he PIKES it on the card:

Copywriters Board

or the url he used to track his postcard response:

Copywriters Board

HAHAHAHahahahaaa

Spend a few hundred bucks with a PRO photographer for some kick-azz pics and get to the point with your headline:

(Naturally I used a quick and dirty stock photo to make my point.)

No offense to anyone here, but when I get a laser printed postcard it tells me that the person is cheap and NOT quality conscious. Fogetabouthim.

HAHAHA - Looks like he and the Heating Oil co decided to share a ream of Lemon Yellow paper there!

That's just SAD that his links don't even work.
