All my postcards have unique urls (www.xxx.com and not www.xxx.com/xxx.html) that have zero traffic before the mailing and these test sites are not indexed by Google.

I do the same... buy url's that are only used for testing purposes. Trying to send prospects to a specific page doesn't give anywhere near as accurate results.

What is your experience with using a postcard that looks like somebody sent it to you from their vacation spot? Would less of these get tossed in the roundfile before they're read?

I agree that the only way to know for sure with the many viewpoints that you've heard, Paul, is to test. I'm wondering how you guys feel about this method as one option.

Dead-on, Subtle. I've tested this and it's true: long urls in postcards or even in classified ads don't work. People have a tendency to type in the url, and then, when the get to the TLD, they stop... and fail to enter the subdomain or subfolder.

It's always, always, always best to use a different domain with every test. I'm not the only one who tested this. John Reese did, too.

After the postcards hit California, you should all know what's coming...

From my understanding, the two best non-postcard direct mail approaches are:

1) "lumpy mail" with green diamonds on the outer edge, oversized in 9 1/2 x 11 envelopes.. "lumpy" meaning there's some promo item inside (cheap something), to grab attention

and

2) the handwritten ones with no return address, which have inside, a yellow sticky lift note, eg "Thought you'd like to see this" - J ...

Along with a "tear sheet", eg an advertorial pitch that looks like someone tore it out of a magazine

(very old approach, but still effective)

For postcards, I'd simply have a big text on it, saying
"go to www.mydomain.com/FreeVideo.mpg to grab a "7 Power Golf Tips...." video you've got to see, if you want to slash your golf score by 15 strokes the next time you hit the fairway... " etc and a benefit-laden stock photo, eg shot of golf ball going into hole, or a scorecard with "94" on it or whatever.. (using golf as an example)

You know that damn "J" gets around!

I just received this...

This one was done by "The Pohly Company".

Got that one, too! I thought it was extremely effective.

Winicki...this is the first one I ever received:

It was for "American Speaker" and I think it was written by Ted Nicholas. I know he did a few ads for them.
