I honestly believe that enveloped letters are not as great as Kennedy used to preach. At least not for what I do. Postcards have come a long way.

I have a friend that built a Million dollar company off of tri-folds in my business. I think tri-folds stink (that is just me, I know)

I would do a mailing of different cards to a market several times per year. Maybe do tri-folds and letters also. Along with other forms of contact of course.

There is no "one shot"

So the question is, would a full color graphic be good on the front, or just dressed down on colored stock and put copy on the front.

this is both jumbo or regular 4x6

Last spring I received a 4 x 6 postcard from a carpet cleaner. The card was printed 2-sided off a laser printer in black toner on 67# canary vellum bristol. It looked like this guy may have just got back from a Joe Polish seminar (or bought one of his courses) 'cause the card was crammed to the max with mouse print type that even 22 year old Navy carrier fighter pilots would have a hard time reading.

It was the first and only postcard I ever received from him. Why? Because the response to a card like his in the area I live in would be zippo. No one in this upscale neighborhood is going to have their expensive carpet cleaned (and possibly damaged) by some guy who looks like he's running a kitchen table carpet cleaning biz. This guy could fold up shop the second there was a lawsuit.

I have no idea who you will be targeting...whether it's the biz side or the residential side. If you're targeting the residential side and your typical customer is living in a trailer park, then go ahead and go with a plain-Jane laser printed vellum bristol postcard. If you're target market is similar to the home you have pictured on your website, what do you think their reaction is going to be to a plain-Jane card?

Heck, if I were in your biz, I'd have biz cards printed on (thick) clear plastic and be sending out gimmicky postcards printed on (thick) clear plastic.

I would love to do the clear thing, but who does that and is it post office acceptable?

I have seen people try to do the biz card thing in clear and the writing is hard to distinguish. There would need to be a color to lay the copy on at least..and it sounds like a zillion dollars to create.

Fancy is great, but I need good enough.

I'm just curious on why you believe enveloped letters are not as great as they use to be? I'm not trying to be a wise guy just wondering what your opinion is based on.

OK... so this is your first contact with a prospect? Do you really think a 4x6 post-card is strong enough (on first contact) in order to convince the prospect that they should enter into some sort of service arrangement with you?

Good enough or "cheap" enough?

What is the lifetime value of the customer? That should bring into focus exactly what you can spend on a mailing.

As you can see, everyone has a different opinion about your question.

The more people who weigh in with opinions, the more confused you're going to get.

At this rate, you're going to end up with Analysis Paralysis.

Actually, Mike, yes they have found a cure.

In fact, Nike adopted the cure as their slogan:

"Just do it!"

Amen to that...though I disagree with analysis paralysis part. After all, it's just simple postcard.

While this dialog has been going on I mailed out a 2500 test. Those in CA should be getting the cards today. Then I have another test going into the mail the following Monday.

All my postcards have unique urls (www.xxx.com and not www.xxx.com/xxx.html) that have zero traffic before the mailing and these test sites are not indexed by Google.
