Dec. 13, 2006 — It was reported today that Wall Street's famed investment bank Goldman Sachs will be shelling out over $16 billion in bonuses this holiday season — an average of over $600,000 per employee.
Many of those bonuses will be performance-based, so some of the company's bigwigs are likely to get as much as $100 million.

...instead of an investment banker?

Not so much about the moolah

More about the passion for writing

it's all about the money for me

but methinks there is some schooling and
'paying your dues' to being an ultra
successful investment banker...

not to say there isn't a little in copywriting,
but it really supports my 'leap frog' belief
of success.

My wife works for one of the biggest hospitals in Houston.

Last year they gave every employee a $3,000 bonus just for working there...

You wouldn't believe what this did for PR (and more importantly the moral of the company).

Hundreds of nurses were lining up the following week to submit their applications/resumes.

It was crazy!

I would love a bonus like that...

The best I ever got was...

Week off with pay.

A check for another week's pay.

And an embroidered leather logo jacket for the show.

But a cool half mil would make a nice bonus.

I see it as bad PR, Stephen. How would you feel if you had a brokerage account with this company or were heavily invested in an IRA or 401K there?

I know I'd feel like the fees were way to high if they can give out $600,000 per employee. I'd be moving my account.

I see your point, but as long as they were making me good money, I could care less what they do with "their" profits....

I guess it's a heck of a lot better than all of it going into one or two employee's pockets as we saw last year with our very own Enron scandal.

But, I wouldn't be able to stop myself from thinking, "Wow, I made 18% from Goldman Sachs last year and I should be happy, but would it have been 20% without the $16 billion in bonuses paid out?

That is just a ridiculous amount of money. How many companies in the world even have $16B or more in total SALES? The cutoff on the Fortune 500 would be 132.

Its is absolutely insane to give one individual $100M for an annual bonus. Nobody is that good.

Value is all relative. Those who write the check have the final say.
