Harlan you are too sensitive... Quote: |
Okay... I was there! Not in the seminar, but you did promise to send it to me you son of a bitch!
| Open your eyes wide and READ the words in bold...
I think you ought to use the Meta Model to evaluate what you've interpreted from Vin's statement
No offence doc, but I think you really need to uphold your identity as an NLP practitioner (who is supposed to be a force for good) and have a little more "compassion" with your words (I don't recall Milton Erickson being harsh, brutal or aggressive)... you are seriously too offensive and sensitive... My Copywriting Mantra: 'When You Try Emphasizing Everything, You End Up Emphasizing NOTHING!'

Erickson could be brutal with clients when necessary. Sometimes collegues who were observing him working with a client were shocked at how far he'd go.
Jay Haley coined the term "ordeal therapy" for some of the sessions and tactics Erickson used.
I did my doctorate on Erickson's techniques. I've read every word the man wrote. I've studied every case he ever did.

I'm going to stay out of the name-calling game and just lay it all out there for anyone following this saga, as well for those who know me pretty well.
This being a small community, it didn't take too long for me to find out what this accusation was about.
Apparently the good doctor's VBC seminar included a script of sorts that was to be used to close clients at a higher price than a copywriter would usually ask for.
It turns out one of the good doctor's students tried using this script to close a client. That client (I'm told) retorted... "Hmmm... Vin Montello just said that same thing." Or maybe it was, "Vin Montello just asked me that same question." Different sources have different versions of the scene.
The “good doctor’s” source, he tells me, is unimpeachable. And at the same time, "the good doctor" doesn't know who the client is, because he didn't feel that information was important.
Funny, because right around now that information would come in handy, don’t you think?
As I've said before, I have nothing to stand on but the truth. I've never seen the script. No one ever gave me any details in the script. I'm not even positive I was aware that there was a script given out at that seminar.
I think I recall someone mentioning something about the seminar teaching you exactly what to say to get more money. But I can't be sure. It was Vegas. There was much drinking.
And above all, those who have done business with me know I don't use any canned script. I don't have to. I have a novel approach to dealing with prospective clients. I actually talk to them. I find out what their issues are and I try to land the job fixing those issues, and making them more money.
If I decided I needed a "script" to do that, I wouldn't steal one. I would write one. I spent 18 years of my life writing scripts. I certainly don't need to use someone else's.
I'm a writer, not a telemarketer.
My clients are individuals. If I even wrote a script I would probably only use it once, and have to write a brand new one to close the next client.
Anyway, the "good doctor" can say whatever he wants. I know the truth. And my colleagues and clients know the truth.
I don't steal... (and barely swipe, much to my mentors' chagrin). Again, for creating copy, I take a novel approach. It's called "writing."
If I wrote a book on writing it would be called, “WRITE This Book,” as opposed to… well, you know.
Now the "good doctor" has warned me that if I decide to go public with this, I will soon be inundated with "embarrassing" posts by more than just him.
The good doctor can have at it. He can call in the troops and bully away. I don’t care if it is career suicide. Unlike so many, I’m not the least bit scared of him. And I have something on my side that’s more powerful than even 100 people who pay me 1000 bucks a month… I have the truth.
Vin
PS- If anyone has any information on who this supposed client is and/or what the question was that I asked, I would love to hear from you. Post it here or drop me a PM.

Vin, I don't know everything that happened but don't worry about it, just keep running your business. Don't worry about being in the "Guru Circle Jerk".
You look like you have a very unique approach to writing copy, just keep working and staying focused. | | | | | Junior Member
