Default Book publishing company offer - tips? - 08-02-2006, 09:40 AM

Hi -

Great news, I finally just got an (unsolicited) offer from one of the largest book company publishers to write and publish a trading book for them...

any tips on what to do/say for negotiations? I realize royalties are are paper-thin, but it would probably be great re credibility and lead generation.

(and thx Harlan for lighting a fire under my butt to get refocused on my trading sites, I spent days redesigning the sites lately, they look more professional, and now wham here's a book offer )

appreciate any tips... my writing quality's not anywhere near Marcia's nor Michel's, so not sure how to go about it.. or even if I should pursue/respond to it..

btw Marcia Yudkin is a truly talented writer, I highly recommend her books; I've read them all.. extremely well-written, better writing skills than most authors I've read.

Paper-thin for X amount of books sold. . .right? What if you sell more than what their "marketing" efforts are projecting? Your royalties should go from paper-thin to 67# vellum bristol to maybe 16pt Kromkote.

Considering you're a graduate of University of Spoiled Children I'm surprised that you can't see the forest for the trees. Of course you should jump on it. I don't think there has been a trading book published that has had a Joyner/Comm scam . . .I mean promotion to it.

Can you imagine the sales of your book on Amazon at 40% off when you're offering $5,000 to $10,000 worth of trading e-books, audio and videos for FREE from famous (joint ventured) traders. . .when they buy your book for $25.00? Just think how fast and big your list will grow? You'll be making great money on the back-end with those $99 dvds you're always piking.

You should be calling or e-mailing the publisher right now.

Default Get an agent - 08-02-2006, 02:43 PM

Ken,

If you have an offer in hand, get a literary agent to negotiate the contract for you. They will take a 15% commission, but they will usually get you more money than what you can get on your own, can handle foreign translations and can help protect your rights.

I can suggest someone privately if you are interested.

And thanks for the praise.

Regards,
Marcia Yudkin

Thanks everyone, much appreciated... (and jaykay, I'm from UCLA, not USC...great ideas on jv/aff type of promos; though they want it all from me vs me being an editor for an article/pitch book)...

Will do re following up. The challenge is, will the credibility boost/backends/embedded pitches in a book, be worth the time / opportunity cost taken away from other projects?

Dragon dictate is a great tool; I'll have to give it some thought.

I did respond to the publisher re affirmative on discussing it; I'll have to find out re remaindering/advance/foreign/percentages if off retail etc and other issues.. main thing is for lead-gen and credibility boosting... created in a short timeframe, so it doesn't take me away from the many other projects I've got going..

That's good to hear 'cause I'm always cheering for UCLA whenever they meet the University of Spoiled Children.

Also, I'm not talking about a pitch book with contributors. The first Joyner book was all his. He sweetened the deal by offering $10,000 worth of freebies from his JV partners. I bought into that one and it was worth it because one of the freebies was a six hour interview with Vincent James ("The 12-month Millionaire").

Joel Comm did the same thing a couple of months back. His book was about Google AdSense written all by him, but he had $7,000 worth of freebies from his joint venture partners.

So that is what I meant about doing a Joyner/Comm type promotion. I don't think it's been done in day trading. You could contact guys like Tony Oz, Dan Zanger, Mark Fisher, etc to contribute either some e-book (special report), audio or video. Have you ever heard Mark's seminar at the NYMEX when he was teaching his ACD method? The guy is awesome.

A lot of trader's will buy your $25 book, which has been discounted 40% at Amazon, when there is $1,000. . .$2,000. . .$3,000 worth of freebies that go with it. (Internet orders only)

I'm surprised you didn't see those promos from Joyner and Comm.
