Hmm in a motivational note here, what's your favorite music to inspire you to write copy?
me I don't listen to anything while I write, but to get "in the mood", I like to fire up my home theater projection system and watch these music DVD videos the day before (in order of preference):
a) AC/DC Live at Donnington
b) Rush Live at Rio
c) Madonna (Girlie Tour/Down Under/Italy)
d) "Razzle Dazzle 'em" (Richard Gere in "Chicago") : my vote for copywriters' theme of the century..
e) The Police
f) The Who
g) Judas Priest
others? what kind of music do you listen to, to get pumped up to write six-figure copy?
for easy listening, I like jazz/reggae/others (Miles, Sade, Coltrane, Sinatra, rippingtons, spyro gyra, peter tosh, marley, pink floyd DSOM)...
Ken

I personally like something that's not too stimulating but still plays in the background. I listen to just about any kinds of music so it varies on my mood of the day. People don't usually believe me when I say that, but it's true, I'll listen to just about anything as long as it's good .
Most of the time when I write, it's more along the techno side or something instrumental, not too fast but a nice calm beat. Something that blends nicely with the background. Am I making any sense heh heh...

Hey Ken,
That's quite a good list there. If you're a Rush fan like I am, you should also check out their new R30 set which is first class all the way.
Joe Satriani and the Los Lonely Boys also work well to get me fired up - though I can't say if they really help my copywriting or not!

Coldplay
Ryan Adams
Ben Folds Five
Sun Kil Moon
REM
Pearl Jam
And on and on and on...
And Ken, when I'm ready to write, I grab two pens, throw 'em in the air, catch 'em and play a little drum solo ala one Mr. Neil Peart (just kidding...but I might start.)

I seem to write best while listening to classical.
I read/study the best while listening to new age, like David Lanz, David Arkenstone, Wayne Gratz, etc.
Definitely nothing loud and obnoxious, as it is WAY too distracting. Loud & obnoxious is fine in regular life, when I don't need top-quality brain input/output. LOL Bailey | | | | | Grand Master

While I have no idea who Richard Cheese is, my list is almost identical to yours michel. As a matter of fact, I was going to answer this hours ago, but said, "Naw... I'm gonna look like the old fogey at 40." But now that you have, I'm down with...
Michael Bublé (A little on the pussified side of crooners, but I like him.)
Harry Connick, Jr.
Matt Dusk (I love this guy!)
Frank Sinatra (I've got no use for Jr)
Dean Martin
Sammy Davis, Jr.
Anyway other than FSJ, you got some great musical taste there Michel. But then again we drummers are like that.
Edited to add: Okay, I went to Cheese's site. I still don't know who he is but I'm guessing he's kinda a tongue in cheek crooner... no? | | | | | Copywriter

Frankie Jr. is mostly for the style... Of course, I'll take Frank Sr. anyday, anytime.
Richard Cheese is a comedian, but again, his style of music is what I like.
I pay mostly attentionto the drums. (I love Matt Dusk's drummer. Seen them in concert, and I absolutely love them.)
Another, and again, it's really about the drums, is Matisyahu, the hasidic jewish rasta-rapper. Amazing stuff! Michel Fortin FREE One-Hour Video Tutorial! I love Matisyahu. Kinda a reggae rap fusion thing. It's insane to watch. It all "looks" so ironic.
And speaking of drummers. Here's something I think a fellow drummer will appreciate. I met a woman (an actress) around 8 years ago and we went on a couple dates. On the second date she says, "You know Vinny... my ex-husband is named Vinny." I said, "Cool." She goes... maybe you heard of him... He's a drummer... Vinnie Colaiuta."
All I could think was... "damn, and I'm not even half the drummer he is!"
