Default Book for freelancers... need title! - 07-04-2008, 10:27 AM

Hi folks,

I'm writing a book this month (kind of a 30 day challenge thing), and I DESPERATELY need a kick ass title.

Some possibilities (none of which make my heart flutter):

FreelanceRenegade.com

Freelance Renegade

How To Quit Your Job, Travel The World, And Make A Mint As A Renegade Freelance Writer

FreelanceFormula.com

The Freelance Formula

7 Easy Steps To Freelance Writing Success

BrianMcElroy.name (I can’t think of a good domain for this one, so I would just use my blog.)

Just Because I Freelance… Doesn’t Mean I’m Broke!

How To Live The “Ultimate Freelance Lifestyle” As A Highly Paid Writer

FreelancingExposed.com

Freelancing Exposed

The *Shocking* Secrets Of The World’s Highest Paid Freelance Writers

Less lame suggestions would be extremely appreciated

Regards,
Brian

Hey Brian,

Can you tell us a little more about the book, or do you want to keep that pretty close to your chest? Whats the angle?

Maybe I've been reading too much Seth lately, but I think your title needs to let the product shine through... or hint at what's different and new about your freelance writing guide.

Why are we buying your book over, say, Bob Bly's? What's different about it? I think THAT should influence your title/url/headline.

Having said that, all your headlines sound tried and tested.

Things that would make ME (someone who's read a lot of copywriting and freelance writing sales letters) sit up and take notice of your guide over the others would be:

  • You're new, and just last year made 50k+, and you didn't buy any gurus books to learn how to do it. It could be like how Dan Kennedy describes walking into his first NSA meetings and finding that he "sucks" at speaking, but is making more than all the others there, even though he's new, and isn't following any of their "rules".
  • You're serving a particular niche and tell us all about that, rather than just a general overview of writing. I guess something like Bob's b2b marketing book. Maybe, freelance writing for computer game manuals or something.
  • You're speaking about something specific about freelance writing, like how to charge higher even if you're new, how to write a proposal as a freelance writer, etc. Even though those topics have been done, I'm not sure anyone's niched it for writers (or whether its even worth doing that).
Those are just some ideas anyway. I'd just want to know what I'm getting that I'm not getting elsewhere.
