KEVIN

Thanks for the reply. I just got Victor Schwab's book on Thursday and started reading the last couple of days. So far, I am impressed. Why spend hundreds of dollars when all you have to spend is $20 to find out the same information.

Let's at least give those other people credit. Heck, they sure convinced me to give their program a shot and got a few dollars from me, but I think I'm cutting off my donations to them. I'm tired of getting bombarded with e-mails and all of the other crap they're throwing my way. Cripes, talk about overkill!

Tim,

Don't be quick to opt out of emails you get. Save them if they are at all compelling so you can learn from them. Email copy is a different art all in and of itself.

I have a couple of different gmail accounts set up just for this.

Besides, as you become successful as a copywriter, you're going to be spending a great deal of money on people's courses to continue your direct marketing education.

Getting the Schwab book was a good start. But if you really want to get a grip on what you're doing, you're going to have to get a mentor or a coach, one that likely charges some pretty hefty change ... but it should pay for itself.

Melvin Powers has also written a great book. Go to his site and you will see it. He wrote 3 good books on business and one great audio. I have them and also vic book. I would part with them for a million dollars.

These are the same books guru use to sell you.

Hello all,

I am completely new to copy writing and this has been a great post!

I was advised by a friend of mine to get "The Ultimate Sales Letter" by Dan Kennedy and "Tested Advertising Methods by Caples".

For someone is new and just getting started, what course/book would you advise me to learn about this topic?

I am an internet marketer but want to get really good at copy as I see it's probably one of the most important parts to succeed.

Thanks in advance

George

For those of you who want a copy of Matt Furey's email copywriting course, he's selling it here:

knockoutmarketing.com/email_fortune.html

I can't post links yet (need 9 more posts), so you'll have to copy and paste.

Before you invest too much money you can get a fantastic FREE education in the basics of copywriting, marketing and direct response by hitting the following websites, printing out and reading everying...

The Gary Halbert Letter (Specifically the Boron Letters)
(Gary) Bencivenga's Bullets
(Clayton) Makepeace Total Package
John Carlton's Blog

Their is gold in there, and best of all it is free. Plus you can start to triangulate when you hear them all coming at the same point from different angles.

Thumbs up Re: The Short List of Top Copywriting Books Or Programs - 08-19-2008, 12:34 PM

This is my first post and I am a newcomer to the world of copywriting.
I have been working my way through Steve Slaunwhite's course. To this point I have been reasonably impressed with it. It allows me to learn at my pace and still get feed back on my writing.

I've seen a lot of recommendations for courses and books. But anyone recommend any copywriting coaches?

I'm looking for someone to ask questions, critique copy, etc.

Any suggestions?

Colin

Hey Colin,

Best opportunity I've seen yet for new copywriters. It ain't cheap, but if you're serious, it'll pay for itself as you go:

Mastery

It sure helped me a lot.

Good luck!

Harlan, I've read most of the titles in your recommended
list and agree with you - they are FANTASTIC!

A few more suggestions?

Maybe not 'directly' about copywriting, but for anyone
who does direct mail, one of the most impactful books
I've read (and one often neglected, I heard of it through
Ken McCarthy) was Dick Benson's "Secrets of Successful
DIRECT MAIL"

Marty Edelson, founder of Boardroom Inc., wrote the
foreword to it. He said:

"When I started my own company in 1972, Dick wouldn't
charge me - and I couldn't accept free advice. That
cost me a fortune. When Benson offered free advice,
you took it! It was always worthwhile listening to
Dick... and it's always worthwhile reading his book."

Another I'd add to this excellent list is 'Method
Marketing' by Denny Hatch (pure gold just for the
swipe copy of winning controls he lists in it).

AWAI's 'Hall of Fame' collection is another treasure
trove, not sure if you can buy it (I got it as a
bonus with one of their other products)

All success
Dr.Mani

P.S. - If these titles were mentioned earlier, I'm
sorry. Went through the entire thread, and didn't
notice them.
