Default My Never Ending Copywriting Story... - 05-02-2005, 02:22 PM

I'm a writer first and foremost.

But as any writer knows, writing is the easy part, getting someone to pay you for it, is the "REAL" battle.

I wanted to become a successful novelist, (still do!) I completed a novel along with four books of poetry. But

Alas! I discovered unless you're involved in the publishing side of writing, there really is very little money to be gained in becoming an author of fiction, prose or poetry.--I read somewhere the statistic is, writers make on average like, $10,000 a year or something like that? And well,

Since my dream is to live beside a beach with white sands, blue skies and sunshine, with a beautiful wife, and 33 brats, I needed to find a way to earn money with my writing real fast!

That's what lead me to copywriting.

Finally, a way that a writer can get PAID for his hard work. But little did I know breaking into the business would be so tough. I visited all the local businesses in my town, but after about the 157th time of explaining to different managers and business owners that, I could not help them with their songs or book deals!

I decided to try a different approach..

I instantly decided I would go and find someone who was already successful at this copywriting stuff, and I would ask him how he started.

That is how I met Alan Forrest Smith, who some of you "might" have heard of before

Yes, I got hold of his email from his website and then I rigorously began to email him, asking for his advice about copywriting, I emailed him again, and again, and again, until one day....

....he eventually cracked, and agreed to talk with me via. Messenger

The first conversation went something like this;

"Hey Alan,

"Who are you"

"My name is Jason Strachan, I've just looked on your website, and I would like to know how I can break into this copywriting business." I said.

I then showed him a sales letter I had written for my services, ~looking back on it now, the letter was so poor it was almost remarkable.~

But anyway, moving on;

Alan replied. "The letter is weak. But so is everyone's letter on their first try you must have persistence first of all in this biz. Look. Read Ogilvy. Everyone of his books, all of his Ads. Everything. Then, when you have done that, read Bruce Barton, Claude Hopkins, then when you have done ALL that! Get back to me. Goodbye."

Now. I wasn't expecting, such a brief and sharp reply, to be frank I was taken aback. ~I later discovered the reason for his bluntness was because he used to get asked that same question 45 times... daily!~

But anyway... I digress..

So I rushed off to the library and I grabbed hold of every copywriting and advertising book I could find, Hopkins, Collier, John Carlton, I discovered Gary Halbert’s website, which opened up another world entirely!--

And I read, I studied, and I practiced day and night, everyday for about four (4) months. Only sleeping to rest my eyes, so that I could read and write more copy again in the morning.

I guess, copywriting to me, was way more than just a career opportunity, but more of a search for meaning and significance, it gave me a way to become a "specialist" at something, and a path to become a person of value! For example...

If I ran across, a guy or a girl in a bar and she told me, Oh Jay, my business is going under, I don't know what to do...I could puff out my chest and say...

"Don't worry man or maam, my super advertising skills will get you out of this!"

But anyway...I digress

...After being locked up in my room for 6 months studying.

I reappeared, and met with Mr Alan Forrest Smith again.

"Alan, I now believe I understand this copywriting stuff, could you please have a quick look at this sales letter I've just written and tell me what you think?"

. Alan replied that same day..

"Well... I'm almost amazed...That is one KILLER LETTER, you write stuff like that for clients and you're going to break the bank, you stick at this stuff kid, and I guarantee when you're 25, you'll be the only guy you know driving an Aston Martin!"

And that was probably the happiest day, of my copywriting career so far, knowing that from that day.

"I Was Someone Who Could Help Build Businesses!"

But anyway...I digress;

Alan Forrest Smith eventually took me on, as his apprentice, I think more because of my un-relentless persistence more than anything else. I began to triple my efforts. I wasn't going to let this chance slip! I studied all his past letters and Ads, and copied them all out longhand, (Pen and paper) he even let me have a go, at writing some of his live projects, a lot of my attempts were pathetic, again. But in spite of that, he kept encouraging me to persist, and letting me try more and more.

So I did, and every time I came back with a stronger and stronger letter!

Until eventually I found great consistency, to where I could write killer copy out at will! And spit world class headlines onto the top of the page instantly! And let it dribble down the page into a world class letter...

I had learned the ways of the force. And it was strong in me.

Then one day, Alan turned around and said to me Jason, your copywriting skills are now truly excellent...BUT...Unfortunately that is only half of the battle.

"WHAT!" I shouted, "what do you mean half the battle?"

"Well...now that you have the skills, you now have to face the most challenging and feared part of the equation to copywriting success, you must learn how to handle clients, and that is a journey one must make alone. I can no longer help you, and have nothing more to teach you.

So off I went. Into the wilderness of the business world, alone. Armed only with my fantastic wit, a pot belly, and my killer copywriting skills at my disposal...

Here are some reports about my journey so far; I keep these collected in my diary, because one day I intend to put this all into a book called "Jason strachan's world copywriting adventures..

Imagine..

"With Just His Rusty Laptop By His Side, He Helps Business people in Trouble All Around The World, With His Super Advertising Skills!!!

Jeese!

Looking back on it I've come some way in a year, I've learned so much brilliant knowledge, and I appreciate every one for helping me get here, (God, my family, friends, and associates alike.) It's true there are a lot of scumbags out there in the world, BUT there is so many Good people too, that just make life great. But now my story is coming to a new chapter today, as right now I am on the lookout for a few new clients.

But please allow me to make a few suggestions; to anyone who might consider hiring me...

First off I'm not cheap. (I now charge a minimum of 1k to write an average sales letter.)

I'm not a graphic designer, so please do not ask me for fancy graphics or and web design, I am a copy "writing" specialist, I wish I was more, but writing was my given talent and that's where my expertise is.--BUT
I do have lots of experience writing proven winning online sales letters, that pull in increased conversion rates (%+) and profits, so bare that in mind too.

I DO NOT work on a royalty basis, I've already fell for this "con" already, If you cannot afford to pay me an upfront fee, please do not message me, because I have been burned by this arrangement TOO many times already.

And, please be patient with me, I may be a little eccentric at times, but just understand when I work on a project I work on it with MY ALL, your project becomes my project. So if I talk to you and sound harsh it's not because I'm trying to take over your business, it's just that I want the best results for YOU. ~I'm not the all round best person in the world by FAR! But I do know how to write effective sales messages. So allow me an authority in that regard at least, and we'll be fine.

Ok, well that's my story so far, as I said I'm looking for a couple of good clients for the next chapter in my story..

And...Well, I hope that it's you.

Best regards

warmly

Jason Strachan

Breakthrough Copywriter--Direct Response.

Here is my email, Jason@ulovescricket.com

P.S If your current sales letter isn't pulling as much sales as you'd like, just send it over to me, and I’ll have a look at it, and ask me to re-write it for you, to pull in more sales. I do charge slightly less for a re-write as well. So, have a blessed day today; the sun is shining, so I will talk to you later.

Bye.
