Hey folks,

Ok here's the scenario. Client emails and says he wants you to work for him on promoting a product through email marketing.

He's aware you are a copywriter.

He then expects you to go out looking for the email addresses to send to, organize those into a list with their respective names and do the actual sending.

Obviously this is a tad more than copywriting so what do you do?

Politely tell the client that you are a mere copywriter; just get on with it and hope he pays you for the extra time; or dump him, he's not worth the hassle?

Sarah,

It sounds that the client is not very "marketing savvy" - it's no problem - most aren't!

The key thing is - is the product or service any good? (or can you make it really good?)

Do you like it? - and does your instinct tell you that you can sell it?

If the answers are yes -

Work out your fee for the copywriting and ALL the extra stuff.

Make sure you "trust" the client.

And just to be certain - get a good percentage of your fee upfront.

Steve

Steve,

Thanks for that, you just put it into perspective a little more for me.

Steve is right. Work it into your flat rate and don't create a separate (lower) fee to do it--make sure it's charged at your hourly rate.

As an aside: Awhile back I asked about cold email marketing for a client...and the consensus here is that unless your list has signed up for emails, the promotion is considered spam. All it takes is one person complaining, and your client is in hot water.

Yes that is a problem.

I considered cold email marketing a while back but changed my mind for this very reason.

I am the first to report spam if and when I get it, the last thing I need is to have someone do that to me!

Thanks for that Suzanne.
