My favorite is the one I can not find the original article for. It is in two books that I own. Just the headline and not the ad.

"How I Made a Fortune With a 'Fool' idea"

That is a provocative headline. It takes you in the know more.

These are the same books guru use to sell you.

Speaking of newspaper headlines... here's a cool site for your favorites:

Newseum | Today's Front Pages | Gallery View

Shows front pages from many of the nations biggest dailys - cool to see how different publishers, from different regions, announce the same story.

Enjoy.

"Famous Movie Star Swears Under Oath
That Her New Perfume
Does NOT Contain An Illegal Sexual Stimulant"

Always liked that one.

That's a great one.

I think it was actually...

"Wife Of Famous Movie Star Swears Under Oath Her New Perfume Does Not Contain An Illegal Sexual Stimulant"

I remember Halbert on a tape explaining the whole marketing strategy for that product launch. He packed a hotel in L.A. and got Ernest Borgnine's wife lots and lots and lots of money (don't remember the exact figures, I think it was eventually in the millions). He had 2 big dudes show up in Secret Service type costumes, and one had a briefcase (containing the secret-ingredient perfume) handcuffed to his wrist.

Beautiful marriage of copy and marketing.

EDIT:
I just found the link to his letter where he explains it...

The David Ogilvy one about the Rolls Royce is so good. Yet I forgot it. Something about hearing the sound of an electric clock while driving at high speed.

That one's a winner and my favorite.

Rachel,

It was something like-

"The Loudest Noise You Can Hear Driving A Rolls Royce At 60 mph Is The Sound Of The Electric Clock"

I may not have this absolutely right - but someone will get it bang on.

According to Ogilvy the engineers at Rolls Royce did try and "quieten" the clock.

This Pierce Arrow ad "The only sound one can hear in the new Pierce-Arrow is the ticking of the electric clock" Also references the Ogilvy version (swipe?).

Here's a Halbert Headline you may not have...

Thanks John,

The correct Ogilvy headline is -

"At 60 Miles An Hour The Loudest Noise In This New Rolls Royce Comes From The Electric Clock"
