Default Quick Intro - 08-23-2006, 01:59 PM

My name is Seannon, and I'm not going to do the long intro that everyone else is doing. I'm 22, leaving college, and interested in copywriting as a potential career. I'm here to learn what is hype, and what isn't- what's possible and what isn't, and what I can of the lay of the land before I spend a lot of time and money trying to get gigs and hone my craft.

I am the best at what I do, whatever that happens to be, and if I do become a copywriter I'm going to spend an amazing amount of time, money, and energy becoming the best copywriter I can be. I want to make sure that this is something that would actually make me happy before I spend the next 2 years of my life utterly devoted to the craft.

Thanks!

Apparently old for this board at 45. Want to hear about Menopause? Ah, I thought not.

Location
The NE corner of my diningroom in the SE corner of my apartment building in the middle of Panora, Iowa, where ever the hell that is.

Primary Business Venture

College
Classes in The University of Iowa Writer's Workshop as an undergraduate

5 Laws of Persuasion by Lenny Eng

Who do you look up to in business
-My father. I consider it a great honor when my mother says, "Beth, you are just like your father." 25 years ago he tried to get the money to fund an idea he had for making gasoline out of corn. They told him it would never fly. Sadly, he didn't live to see it become a reality.
-Dale Carnegie
-Michael Vogeny (gave me my first job in Advertising)

Awards and Recognition
-Became a finalist, then first runner up, in the bid for the Nevada State Legislative brochure. It was my first assignment EVER in advertising. I came up with the concept, presented it and did so 1800 miles away from the main office in Chicago, Illinois.
- Critic's Choice Award and recognition in public speaking at state level in Iowa.
- Three of the newsletters I designed and produced for nonprofit organizations as a desktop publisher were given national awards for design and content.

Default A new copywriter in Perth, Western Australia - 09-15-2006, 12:48 AM

Shona Lynch here from sunny (at least today) Perth, Western Australia.
I've been lurking - and have resisted signing up to this forum for a long time... don't really have the time to write a lot of posts. I'm giving in today! After starting my home-based biz as a solo copywriter few months back, I want to keep in the loop with like minded people such as here on this forum. And I'll be needing some honest feedback on my copy.

My business is four month's young... and I've had about 10 clients. I only work 15 hours per week (2yo to look after), so I'm happy to work little and paid well!

I first began writing direct response copy for my husband's car detailing business. It transformed his business and now - after MANY YEARS of studying direct response - I'm writing copy for other people.

Thanks to these people who mark milstones on my journey to this career as a copywriter: Mal Emery --> Brett McFall --> Pete Godfrey --> Ed Dale --> Gary Halbert --> Trevor Crook --> Dan Kennedy --> Kristina Mills

I am devoting the next several months/years to learning everything I can about this strange and wonderful thing called copywriting.

Before that I read a couple of books by Joe Sugarman, Jay Abraham, David Ogilvy, Victor Schwab, and Claude Hopkins... and I've been told that I should probably give "Think and Grow Rich" a try.

Total immersion, baby... it's the only way.

Financial proofreader (yes, that is exactly as boring as it sounds)

Welcome Jim. Sounds to me like you're doing everything right. Now you have to stop just learning... and start earning. I did say "just learning." We're always learning, but the best way to learn is to do.

Good luck. If you need any help, there's a lotta helpful people here.

I've trolled around here for the past two weeks so I figured its about time for a formal introduction. There's so much great stuff here the scroll button on my mouse is wearing down.

I have so many questions and am eager to learn more. I feel like a free puppy with a dozen people towering over my cardboard box... I just don't know where to start!
