Hello,

As part of a copywriting course that I have rights to, which I am revamping to make it more distinctive, I would like to add some brief PDF lessons, which would be delivered monthly, and which would use real online websites sales letters as teaching examples.

Hence, I would like to create a PDF file that begins with the URL of an online sales letter. The rest of the document then discusses the lessons to be learned from that letter; headline, buillets, call to action and so on.

The point is this. Can one simply do this for online letters, or does one require permission from the copywriter who write the letter? I have no problem asking for permission, but I am wondering if one even has to for a purpose such as I have just described.

I hope I have explained this clearly. At no time am I thinking of providing an actual copy of the letter itself. Rather, in either the email giving them the PDF file, or in the PDF document itself, I provide the link to the sales letter. The PDF is then a lesson about the letter, i.e. the key copywriting techniques being used in the sales letter.

What are your thoughts?

Regards,

Asoka Selvarajah

Hello,

It's just my hunch, but I imagine you need to ask permission from the writer of the letter you are using. All the more so since you (I assume) are profiting from the copywriting course and using their work to improve your product. It just seems like the appropriate thing to do.
