Default Interesting "Super" Negative Word - 03-22-2008, 01:32 AM

Gliff ee us 2007 is showing the word "video" as a -123! The previous version had it at -109 so it's getting MORE negative.

That's a tough one to overcome as there aren't many synonyms for video. I can't figure out why.

Note: The word is deliberately misspelled to avoid triggering any google alerts, which I'm sure are in place. I don't want any jerks showing up.

I've run into industry specific words that score poorly on gly phy as well. Sometimes I settle for simply hitting below (but close as possible) the 600 mark for headlines if I have to use the word...

I'd be interested to hear what testing shows for situations like this...

How could you possibly pay attention to that tool?

Might as well write copy with a "Magic 8-Ball".

From what I gather, Jason, Eric Graham (and more importantly his results), Michel Fortin and Brian Keith Voiles would disagree with you.

And using it doesn't mean you necessarily "worship" it and take everything it says as "The Word of God".

I'd assume BKV plays with it just because it seems like a toy.

Michel, probably cuz he's friends with James.

And Eric, I have no idea.

Last time I seen a test I believe in the word "video" dramatically
increased CTR on email subject lines.

Honestly, I think most people who talk about testing are full of
%#@^.

Of course, don't take that as a word of God.

It's just a rumor he started!

What I'm curious about is the "why".

I think Gliffius is primitive in it's logic. There may be a ton of poorly performing ads that use the word 'video' in it that are throwing the numbers way off.

That's really what I was trying to think of. When you see something that is over 100 points negative, the likelyhood that it's a negative word is very high. If its like -10 or -25, I"m not as interested in the why as that's in the "noise".

Lastly, anyone that was here a year or so ago knows that I'm not James B fan. To say the guy is abrasive is like saying a 3 day old Mexican plate lunch smells a little.

You're right, people normally say they test to make themselves sound smart and like they're taking huge action. It's mostly BS. Go to their websites, get on their lists, pay attention to their e-mails, re-directs, cloaks, code, etc and you'll find what you say is true.

Also, I just used the word "video" in the subject line of an e-mail blast we did last last week and it was one of our most successful subject lines to date.

I think I'll stick with my OWN tools. It's called asking my market what THEY want, what THEY like, what they DON'T like, and creating products and services for THEM.

Here's the best thing anybody can do. Buy a yearly subscription to Survey Monkey for 200$:

SurveyMonkey.com - Powerful tool for creating web surveys. Online survey software made easy!

And in your autoresponders, hopefully you have at least a years worth of messages that go out automatically, be sure to sprinkle surveys throughout it that are under 5 questions long for each survey.

For example, you can do it on Month 1, 3, 6, and 10. That's 20 questions total. You can do more or less, it's up to you.

You can have multiple choice, but make sure to add open ended questions in there also, that's when the gold comes out. Ask stuff like...

1. What's the most disappointing product you've bought in the last year? And why was it disappointing?

2. What would be the dream product you'd want me to create?

3. What's your experience level?

4. I'm 27, how old are you?

Hopefully people see that this is million dollar information that can be used to create all new products, help with your copywriting because you'll know EXACTLY who you're writing to, etc.

That settles it, then. Gliffius is not only wrong, it has everything backwards.

Nobody asked anyone to change or use any tools. I was commenting that I was surprised the word would be SO negative.

Starting a thread around here is like the old Forrest Gump "box of chocolates" thing...

Well I know some people who use Glyphius but I've never used it so I really don't know.

Np, I wasn't really talking about just you, Ricky. This thread was NEVER on track. It doesn't bother me. I figure if the thread doesn't go where I hoped it would, it was because I didn't express my desires well enough. And that's pretty bad for a copywriter
