Default Quick question for copywriters. - 03-12-2005, 06:59 PM

Hey guys,

This has been on my mind a LOT lately.

If you were selling a product(for yourself or a client), for example, a computer part (thats not what I am selling, just an example). Would you write a sales letter for it?

Im guessing not. But Im not sure. If you would not, would you sell it for instance on a website with some sort of "short copy" as the description or something? Or maybe setup a mini course about the product and sell it in that?

Looking forward to your input,

Matt Geri

Matt,

Without specific details, it's hard to give specific answers...

1) Who is your specific target, and what sort of approaches are currently being used towards them to get them to purchase similar products?

2) Where do they make their purchases from? Online? On the phone? At trade shows? From the mail? Find where they are when they buy...

3) Are these individual purchases or bulk contracts?

4) High end, or low end?

5) What is it that sets your product apart from the competition?

And the list of questions goes on and on...

You really have to know your target market inside and out, reverse engineer what is currently working with them, then see if there are ways you can do it even better, with more clarity and impact, making your product the obvious choice.

There's nothing wrong with writing a "sales letter" for a computer part - and it needs to be as long as necessary to get the desired action - but this isn't the question to ask right now... if your target market are distributors, and they are used to dealing with sales reps, face to face - then maybe you need a power point presentation, or a white paper that accompanies your face to face marketing proposal...

It all depends... in any case, you have to know your target market's hot buttons... and what is making them respond now, and where.

Right now, you're asking the wrong question - you should know your target inside and out before you even create your product... before you decide on a strategy to get the message in front of them...

Tim

Hi Matt,

I'd just like to say that what Tim says is well said! How you communicate with your market (i.e. whether it's a sales letter or a short web page or postcard or whatever) just depends on a lot of factors.

As I keep saying, one size does not fit all.

If you'd care to be more specific about what you're selling and what your challenges are, I'm sure you'll find that there are many talented people here who can provide you with good advice.

Jane

Hey guys,

Thanks so much for the replies.

Here is an example of one product I sell. I sell toll free numbers.

So far I have made two sales (which give me residual income). Ive just sent the traffic to the vendors webpage. I am very sure that if I send them to some sort of a landing page I can increase the conversion. I can even get some very good testimonials from people using the service.

So far, Ive only sold to them online.

What Im thinking of doing for the toll free numbers in particular, is writing a sales letter targeted towards real estate investors (they would find a toll free number very useful) and then advertising on real estate investing website and in ezines.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again,
Matt

The more testimonials the better.

If you can show an increase in CR% with a new page, you might even be able to sell the rights to use your letter to the main company... interesting thought.

Like a copywriter.

If it works for this target, then it would probably work for many others as well with slight modifications to the page to match the target...

Why not?

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Tim
