There is no one trigger word to meet all needs. Just to throw out some words that are alleged to be good trigger words is not the right thing, or the smart thing, to do. For example, the words "quick" and "fast" appeal in "some" situations and with "some" people. They turn off other people in other situations.

An agency or the copywriter must do motivational research and depth probing in order to learn what trigger words to use with the group (actually to the one person) to whom you're trying to appeal.

Too many copywriters and just about all people who write their own copy, depend on the same words. That's why the Web looks the same. Everyone has a site that looks like everyone else's. They read this stuff and then think they have the answers. But the copy usually belongs in a barf bag.

Some people, and hence, some 'groups of people' use certain words that carry a special meaning for them.

Sometimes when you're in a conversation with someone, they'll keep repeating how they love closure, how important it is to have closure and how, without closure, things don't work in your life.

In this example, closure is a word that has a special meaning to this person and using it to motivate him or her can be very powerful. Guiding them from their need to closure and tying it into a solution you have.

Now the lesson here is the same as above; this is highly specific to the situation, the individual, the group. The key: The power is not in the WORD, but in the people that have chosen that word to symbolize a need, emotion, desire, etc.

As with all good copy, it's an exercise in knowing people, not words.

Not that...

YOU
FREE, and

aren't perfect...

but if you wanna get specific (for this board as an example):

CONVERSION!

That's what you mean Susanne & Erik -- right?

Powerful words THIS board would relate to.

If I were going after the "Association" market (which we sold to and through for years using joint ventures and endorsements), I would use...

NON-DUES REVENUE!

Major trigger for them.

Great points S & E!!!

Exactly JP, it's all about context.

And often times, it changes.

Gary Bencivenga did a promo that had the headline "Get Rich Slowly" and it scored big time because it hit on the lack of credibility in the 'Get Rich Quick' mentality in biz-opps.

While once, get rich quick was an amazing appeal many would respond to.

Basically, it's the old 'technique' versus 'inner game' (Eben Pagan talks about this) - the power is not in the technique (or the word), but in the psychology that made those trigger words successful in the first place. And often times, when a trigger word is overused, it takes knowledge of the people you sell to, to sense what words will trigger them next.

That's why I think it's generally better to stick to studying people rather than words.
