Ogilvy would have changed 2 things in the ad to make it a bit more effective.
What would he have changed apart from clarifying his proof (i.e. proof of government legislation regarding deaths etc.(it was vague)) and a few soldier reports from the front line?

Reason: Personal attack against Mr. Subtle
I don't necessarily disagree, but isn't this "Copywriting Discussion?"
Should the political commentary be in "Off Topic?"
Just an observation. I'd say the same thing if someone started bashing The Heritage Foundation here.
Like Anthony said, I think Subtle put up that ad to discuss the copywriting and marketing used. Not the organization behind the ad.
EDITED to add this:
Anyway, I think a call to action is a biggie missed in that ad. Perhaps proof too, but my guess is that they are preaching to the choir. They don't need additional proof. They're not gonna convince the folks this ad DOESN'T target.
So I'm curious as to the other thing Subtle mentioned.
Ogilvy would have made 2 immediate changes to the layout. The first would have been changing the body copy to a serif font and then breaking up the 1 column of text into 2 columns (or maybe 3 depending on how much text there was).
I'm currently testing a full page newspaper ad in various parts of the US. The other day I was told a certain newspaper wouldn't run my ad unless I changed all the body copy to a sans serif font. Since it's an extremely text intensive ad, I passed on that particular paper because I know it would have been extremely difficult for the vast majority to read and comprehend.

Yeah, If I wanted to cause trouble I would have posted the ad below (an old post from my website where I did a before/after makeover of a Halbert advertorial) and would have asked... Which of the two ads would have caused the biggest stink in "The Bible Belt"?
