Thumbs up Don't Teach a Man to Fish - 09-12-2007, 11:54 AM

The saying goes, "Feed a man a fish, and you will feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you'll feed him for a lifetime."

Mike Filsaime disagrees. He believes it's the opposite.

In fact, Mike Filsaime just posted a blog entry that, to me, is probably one of the best if not THE best blog post of all 2007. It's that good.

I highly recommend you go and read it. (It already garnered over 100 comments!) But the reason for me posting it here is, I want to discuss how you guys feel this is or will affect copywriting...

I have found that software can outsell “HOW TO” almost 3 to one at double the price.

> Software in what niche?

> Is this all talk about GRQ Junk?

We sold over 1000 sites, and made over $100,000 in just 7 hours and had to put SOLD OUT on the page. If I hade 10,000 sites, I could have sold them all and made $1 Million dollars.

> Once again he's talking about GRQ schemes and their business models

Give me a Niche in B2C that you
can sell the "Golden Goose" to, anyone?

You can't, because this is all GRQ tactics.

For people not in the "know," could you explain... and what GRQ means? (For the newbies on this board.)

I prefer what I heard on the warrior forum a few weeks back.

Teach a man how to fish and you can sell
him lures, baits, hooks, line, a boat for ages.

This is exactly how that Ken Evoy guy with his "blog()" made
all his money. Giving away books on how to create pages and
sell them the tools later they need to create those pages.

Genius!

Oh, I was thinking about Get Rich Quick?

I know that Mike is a good marketer (heck he make millions) but I have never seen him speaking about any B2C sites. If he has any, I want to see them.

Who's getting rich quick on this one? Mike said he spent a year building the sites, so it certain wasn't quick for him. And he only sold them for $749 so I doubt these sites are generating enough "as is" to make anyone rich.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that most GRQ are B2C. You don't see Fortune 1000 companies out there buying products from Don Lapre.

Personally I thought Mike had a good observation there.

My $.02 worth.

I thought what Mike wrote was right on target for any audience, not just GRQ. Allen Says said the same thing in "Private Posts" years ago.

The part I have trouble with, is how Mike reconciles this with the concepts outlined in the Butterfly Manuscript. They seem to be contradictory to me because, in the BM, he outlines a marketing funnel.

The "button", as described in the blog post, would be the bottom of the funnel. Is he saying that you no longer create a funnel? I don't think that is right.

I think you still offer fishing lessons on the front end, but at deep discounts. Then try to sell them the fully-loaded and rigged 54' Hatteras sport fisherman at the cash register.

yes, mike says on his blog.that people usually lazy. they want to have GQR. so don't teach people how to fish. because some people already know, how to fish. but they don't want to fish, because it will cost them any aomunt time, money, or effort. so they want a system, that already running.

I think that's it

The post is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!

But to veer off course for just a second...

The price, $749 and they FLEW OFF THE SHELVES! -

My math says $749 x 1,000 = $749,000. Not $100,000. Out of curiosity, did I miss somehting glaringly obvious?

Great post!

So how does this apply to us in the copywriting world?

Do we need to become graphic designers and design the whole web page to go with the copy?

Then do we need to start promoting the site for the client?

I can imagine how the fee for copywriting services would shoot through the roof if someone was innovative (or crazy) enough to try it. LOL.

But in all seriousness.....how can we apply this to copywriting? Any ideas?

Lucinda
