Default A question about ego - 08-30-2007, 05:18 PM

To all of you much smarter than I.

I'm a mortgage planner and debt specialist. (it's like a mortgage broker on steroids)

I'm an amateur copywriter. (which I love)

Question is this:
I've recently been quoted in major news media for my commentary on the mortgage markets and interest rates. (The Orlando Sentinel, Cnnmoney.com, USAToday.com, Yahoo Finance, AOL Money & Finance, as well as many other financial websites and newspapers)

How do I convey this advanced knowledge (and social proof) to clients without sounding like an ego maniac?

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Dan, if you're talking about the website in your sig, I think you should play up these quotes more than you are, not less. Maybe you can put one or two of the actual quotes up (assuming they're relevant to what you're selling).

Also -- you've got several audio books listed on the main page. Are they for sale? Because I couldn't find an order link anywhere.

"I am an expert on mortgages. So when major newspapers and television reporters need answers on mortgages, they call me. If you google my name you will find that I am widely quoted time and again including most recently The Orlando Sentinel, Cnnmoney.com, USAToday.com, Yahoo Finance, AOL Money & Finance, and more."

Every now and then, I'd say a copywriter should let someone else write snatches of their own promotional stuff. Mainly because a lot of people (myself included) are worried about sounding too proud or overblowing their value.

If nothing else, pretend you're writing this for a client. You know you would trumpet these things. Why not do it for yourself? Shout it out, man!

Just use reprints like they there was no tomorrow. I'd include them with everything I sent out.

Guys:

Thanks for the perspective. It's something I've been struggling with. I'll make the changes and let you know how it pans out.

Was it Ziglar who said that Timid salesmen have skinny kids!

You can soft sell this by including the actual articles from the newspapers
or shout them out yourself and have fat kids. If you don't promote yourself
as an entrepreneur then you are in the wrong field.

These are really TESTIMONIALS that shoot your credibility through the roof,
in other words, more money in the bank for you. If you are shy about it
that's a form of false humility.

You're NOT lying--you WERE quoted by these papers. That's truth in
advertising.
