Default What if it makes me "brain-dead"! Am I in danger? - 06-05-2007, 05:52 PM

Hello, guys!
I thought, some of you might be in the same boat with me. And my situation might resonate with many people on this board.

As you know, I have a full-time job. Gotta pay those bills while trying to get my empire off the ground. This is a temporary job, where I spend most of the time copying, faxing, and typing. Pays well, but it's completely brain-dead.

It is difficult to switch my mind from this "lowly" activity to more challenging tasks, such as discussing marketing strategies or business plans with my clients. I know I should detach myself from this job. It's just an income generator. But it does affect me in a certain way. I mean, emotionally and psychologically wise. After all, I have to be here 40 hours a week. I know I have no choice. But it is similar to sitting in a swamp all day long, and then facing a mind-boggling task of ascending a tall and steep mountain. Ever tried to do that??

There's your problem. You always have a choice.

hey Angie...yeah its difficult, I've done it, many on here have done it, but I always remember reading about some of the single moms who not only had a regular job, but kids WHILE they were trying to start a business and who went on to build multi million dollar businesses...I will never forget the Lilian Vernon story as an example...

It's definitely hard work to build a business around a current job, children and so on but completely worth it. Just about anything that's worth it takes time and effort. Hang in there, and let the experience make you want success even more.

Don't remind me... I built my first business as a single mom and worked a full-time job and I certainly don't want to think back to those days! Unfortunately, no billion dollar biz for me, just a comfy 6 figures

Thank you guys for responding.
You gotta do what you gotta do. What else can I say?
And you have to be emotionally strong to handle it properly without losing your dignity in the process.
My hats off to all of you who have weathered the storm and prevailed in the end.

PS: RJ, are you a member of a rock group? I like your spiky hairdo.

There was a woman in our city who was a stay at home mom the whole time she was married. Her husband owned a Nissan or Honda dealership here (can't recall exactly). He died suddenly and she had to take over the business. Problem was the dealership was in serious trouble. She knew nothing about the business, but took it over nonetheless and not surprisingly turned it around and made it uber successful. I believe she had at least one daughter to raise also. Im sure she had moments where she felt she couldn't hack it, but she persevered and exceeded even her own expectations. Stories like that keep things in perspective for me.

As to the hair - lol - almost everyday someone says, "Hey, you look just like Rod Stewart". It used to annoy me, but now I have embraced my outer Rodness and I just accept it. I saw him in concert here in our city a couple months ago and it was hilarious how many people took a second look at me as I was walking through the stadium. I even had one guy walk up to me and say, "You should impersonate him" and I'm like, "Dude, you've never heard me sing."

Stress and creativity don't mix for most. My advice is to relax after work for one hour. Clear your mind and allow your body to unwind. Then spend an hour or however long on the work you really love.

Rachel, it's not the stress I am concerned about. Stress I can handle. Actually, some of it could be good for us. I mean, a reasonable amount.

My day job is not stressful at all. It's just utterly, mercilessly, outrageously, and profoundly...brain-dead! Thinking about my clients, prospects and upcoming projects keeps it from turning into fossil.

Hey, RJ. I thought about Rod when I looked at your photo. They way you look could be a goldmine. Tap into it and make a fortune! Wait a minute, who is supposed to inspire who here???
