Jason, you shouldn't let that deter you.
Duplicate content isn't nearly as big an issue as everyone seems to think it is otherwise, pretty much every site on the Internet would be penalized.
For example, my site is an absolute smorgasbord of duplicate content, and I've never once been penalized. In fact, my page rank (
PR), which I place very little value in by the way, has just been increased by Google.
I lurk on
SEO forums all the time, and while
SEO experts differ in their opinion about duplicate content, many
SEO experts, including top
SEO expert and owner of HighRankings.com, Jill Whalen share the same viewpoint as mine.
In addition, I've also heard many
SEO experts say, Google very rarely penalizes sites for having duplicate content.
However, Google does "devalue" certain ranking criteria and places value on others. So if a site isn't ranked highly, it doesn't necessarily mean it has been penalized, it just means it is using techniques which have less value than others.
That said, in the end, you have to do what you feel comfortable with.
