A word of caution on the aspirin...

Make sure you use the type that come in the small sealed cellophane bag-- because if you just glue a couple aspirin to a sheet of paper-- just watch the reaction your letters will cause after they reach their destination. This is of course AFTER the letters have gone through the post office machinery and the aspirin has been ground into a fine powder.

Don't even ask! Or I'll have to tell you stories about the FBI and National Disease Control!

Why would you "get it?" You've limited yourself to just the online world ignoring a world that's 4 times larger.

But who knows, I've never received an e-mail that started off with...

Dear Mr. Subtle,

As you can see, I've attached a PDF to this letter.
Yadda yadda yadda.

(Anyone hear a few lightbulbs just go off?)

Personally, I think that I've sent out the coolest grabber of all time with the solid gold coin. But, David Frey received one almost cooler a number of months ago...a box with a portable DVD player in it. He opened it and it automatically played the sales message. Do you think he spent 10 minutes listening to the pitch? You bet he did. And if that person called him a day a two later do you think he'd take his call? You bet he would.

I have an old book (mid 90s) called Excellence In Direct Marketing - The International ECHO Awards. That book has a lot of cool grabber samples.

As always Subtle your stuff is awesome. I confess I stayed up until 2 a.m. the other night reading every post. Great stuff. LMAO.

P.S. Where can you find cheap DVD players? You just made sirens go off for a campaign idea...

You want grabbers?

I'll tell you about the "Mother of all Grabbers" in a minute, but first...

An ad agency here got an expensive golf club that broke down in three sections - then put it in way expensive packaging that delivered one section a week to executives. The program cost $60,000 to create and generated millions in sales.

I know a guy that used to record a pitch on tape - then send the tape recorders to his leads (again, B2B, big dollar sale). (sounds like the DVD is the modern equivalent of that.)

I've got a client that had Expensive boxes designed which when opened had a coffee mug inside and a starbucks card inside the mug. The copy on the outside of the box was... "Inside, the secret ingredient behind thousands of ad campaigns." Along with the mug was a white paper selling their services. (again, targeted at Fortune 100 VP's of marketing on big ticket items).

And...The MOTHER of all grabbers...

So... I'm walking through an art's and crafts store and see this pearl-essence glitter - really cool looking. I think - wow, looks like magic dust. Hmmm... So, I go to department store and get a bunch of those little perfume sample vials and dump the perfume out, and my magic dust in.

I tape it to the top of a letter for a mail house client of mine with the headline, "Do you ever wish you had a little magic dust to sprinkle on your DM response rates.".

It works great, people calling in. Wonderful. I'm already thinking of how to roll it out to everything from marketing to sales training services.

But then we got a response from from the FBI...

You see, my magic dust promo went in the mail the same week the Anthrax scare hit after 911. Aparently our magic dust scared the living ..... out of enough people to get the FBI interested. They had it analyzed before dropping by my clients. When they walked in, I believe the agent had one of the letters with the little vial attached, looked at my client and said, "What the @!#$ are you doing?!"

Thus ended the mother of all grabbers.

Robert

Robert:

As Dan Kennedy says: "The difference between salad and garbage is timing."

Thanks for sharing. You might want to revive that bad boy since anthrax is off the radar....

P.S. I recently called someone and left a message. Then sent them a phone explaining how the only reason I could imagine they hadn't called back was a "phone issue". She called me.
