I've never really written a sales letter before and I found myself floating in the dark abyss of the unknown hook and headline - exactly as you mentioned.

This is very very good advice.

I'd also add one other little mental trick that will help you get writing that letter fast and keep writing it.

Just write any old crap...
Eliminate writer's block forever

I know it sounds wacky but it works like magic to remove writer's block and all those "I've got to get this perfect" limitations that stop you from writing copy.

Also if I'm writing copy for an information product BEFORE I sit down and write that letter the way I do research is by going through every part of the information product and writing the bullets...
Write your bullets first

That prepares you for the fast, non-thinking writing where your persuasive one-on-one copy can just flow out on to the page.
