Talking Truth in Advertising? - 01-30-2007, 06:02 PM

Copywriter Tony Policci, a copywriter I admire, put out his newsletter today. And included this little tidbit...

Check this out.

15,000 men answered this actual ad in the Atlanta daily newspaper:

Quote:
SINGLE BLACK FEMALE seeks male companionship, ethnicity unimportant. I'm a very good-looking girl who loves to play. I love long walks in the woods, riding in your pick-up truck, hunting, camping and fishing trips, cozy winter nights lying by the fire. Candlelit dinners will have me eating out of your hand. Rub me the right way and watch me respond! I'll be at the front door when you get home from work, wearing only what nature gave me. Kiss me and I'm yours. Call (404) -000-0000 and ask for Daisy.
Yes, over 15,000 men answered that ad - placed by the Atlanta Humane Society for an 8-week old black Labrador retriever named Daisy.

Right. But Snopes (love that site!) also reports that the Atlanta Human Society has received tons of calls following the (albeit false) ad.

So, it kinda worked, didn't it?

Yeah, for the guy who placed the faux ad. His ROI was a pretty big belly laugh. But, I don't think anyone at the Atlanta Humane Society appreciated the 15,000 additional calls from lonely, horny guys. I would also guess that many of the 15,000 guys who called didn't care too much for the joke either.

Funwrecker.

(In all seriousness, I agree -- it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye or 15,000 people pick up the phone for no reason.)

All the same, that ad is great. Some of the details are all the more clever for their subtlety... "candlelit dinners will have me eating out of your hand" -- that just kills me!
