Reading through this board for a few hours, it seems like most writers here are "fire and forget". What I mean is that the writer will write the copy, maybe do a couple of edits, and they're done.

Suppose a writer produces a piece that pulls 5% from jump.
Where do I find writers that would at least try for 6% through test marketing?

I think I am in the write place. Do they exist here?

A few factors you should consider…

Are you paying royalties? And are they big enough to motivate a copywriter to strive for that 1% increase?

No royalties? No reason to keep working for no more pay.

Royalties too small? Due to low volume for instance – again, not worth the time.

If a 1% increase in your response rates only means a fractional increase in pay – it’s not worth the time. If a few tweaks here and there could double, triple or more my fee -- then sure let’s test -- that’s normal operating procedure.

Many copywriters will give you multiple variations of the Headline/lead copy for you to test as part of the initial deal. And/or variations of the offer.

But if there’s no significant financial motivation to continue tweaking and testing – of course a copywriter is just going to take their fee and walk.

One other option is to structure a retainer for x months afterward – or for x number of variables -- for the copywriter to provide.

If you want completely new copy to test though – you’ll need to pay the fee. Though you might get a price break provided…

1. There’s a significant (and proven) opportunity for large commissions.
2. You negotiate multiple packages up front.

Bottom line: Make it worthwhile for the copywriter to keep tweaking and testing – and he will.

Regards,
John

Actually, although many don't advertise the fact, a lot of us work with our clients in implementing their copy, autoresponders, PPC ads, whatever the case may be.

And we help them set up their testing properly and assist with monitoring results, tweaking elements of the sales page as required to improve conversion.

I know several copywriters who provide that extra value. After all, we want to see our clients succeed.

Obviously there has to be a market for their product or service to begin with. But I don't know many copywriters anyway who would take on a client who's trying to sell something to a dead market.

This is a great question...

When I write copy I consider it a marriage.

I will usually provide several headlines and pre-heads with the original copy for split-testing.

With email copy I provide multiple subject lines and sometimes multiple opening paragraphs.

I'll keep suggesting copy changes and other changes to your marketing process that you can split test to increase your sales for months, even years after I've written the copy.

I've found this is in my best interests anyway because:

# I do a lot of deals that include a percentage of turnover

# You make more money which means you can hire me more often and at a higher rate.

I would rather have half a dozen clients I help to get very rich than 50 clients where I barely know their businesses and just write off copy as fast as I can to make a buck.

I also have a service I run with my technical geek friend Frank Bauer where we write and split test 4 changes to your website copy for a very modest fee.

Very few copywriters do any real split testing work but the best of us love it because it's where we learn what is working in the market right now.

Check out the copywriting/split testing service at the first link below.
