Just curious, if I were to hire a copywriter to "correct" some web pages and make them more appealing and enticing what would I be looking at for a price? This meaning I have all the pages done and content on them but I just need some work done for some eye-catching headlines and smooth talking content adjustments.

Detz,

You don't want to do that. And, I doubt any serious copywriter would bother doing it also. Here's why:

First, you only hire a copywriter for one thing... sales. So asking a proven copywriter to just come and "fix up" what you've already done could be a potential nightmare for the copywriter. The reason being, what you wrote, with all due respect, may not do a convincing job selling your product or service.

Therefore, the copywriter would either... A) Have to rewrite the entire package... B) Quit working with you because they know it won't work... C) Do a crappy job trying to use copy that just won't sell... D) All of the above

Also, copywriters don't cost you money, they make you money. They know it. That's why anyone who knows doesn't mind charging from the mid to high 4 figures to 5 figures for a "simple" sales letter (which is never simple).

Look at hiring a proven ad writer as an investment. You pay upfront for a greater return in the very near future. Sometimes just weeks! Don't think old Buffet could even do that. Been reading a lot about him.... he spent mucho time in analysis, then he moved... and moved big. Great marketing lesson there.

Hope this helps you out.

Zachary,

your comments remind me of some of the problems the guy that designed the original iMac for apple used to have ... and possibly still does.

A company would develop a product and after they had finished ask him to "iMac it". In other words, make it look cool in a similar style.

He would then explain that this wasn't possible, that he couldn't just slap a layer of fancy plastic on the outside and make it work.

The design starts at the beginning.

Best Wishes,

Tom

My clients know that a rewrite will cost them pretty much the same price as something from scratch.

I let them know that when I start rewriting, I have no idea if I'm going to use 95% of what you wrote... or 5%.

They're not paying me by the word but for the results.

If you're not in a position to pay for the writing, you can ask about a critique.

Thanks, great info and it makes sense. I'm guessing rates depends on experience and what is being asked for I just can't believe it cost so much. I guess I two options, start saving my pennies or try learning it myself.

Vin, I loved your comment "They're not paying me by the word but for the results." It rung so true, that I'm trying to coin a slogan or USP from it.
Maybe on your price list; write you don't pay me by the word, but for the results. Somebody once wrote something like "I'd rather you complain about the price today than the results, later" or something like that.

Learning it yourself is indeed one option, as copywriting is one of the most expensive things you can outsource, but remember, marketing is an investment, not an expense. As they say, it takes money to make money. Think about how much your product costs multiplied by how many sales you could potentially make with a winning sales site. For example, if your product is $95, and you make 100 sales a month, that's $9,500! Wouldn't you spend $4,000 to make $9,500 each and every month of the year? Good copy more than pays for itself the first time out of the gate.

On the other hand, if you're just starting out and simply don't have the funds (after all, if you had that kind of money you probably wouldn't be delving into online marketing in the first place) that's another story, and a copy critique would help you out. Email me at james@jamesmpalmer.com to find out more about my copy critiqueing service).

Best of luck,
James

Hello,

Is it possible to find some copywriters who would like to work on a commission basis ? For example if i plan to launch a new infoproduct, if i propose 50% of the benefits would it interests copywriters ?

Best regards,
