I was just surfing around the web when suddenly I heard this high-pitched teenaged girl voice telling me that I'd "been selected to receive a free Xbox 360." Where the heck was it coming from? I quickly naved to a new site, but the audio was still there. Finally, I closed my browser window and saw the culprit hovering there all flashy and obnoxious and annoying.

It was a pop under ad with audio attached. I'm sure it'll up their conversion rate by leaps and bounds, but if I ever find the company that did this, I will stab them in their eyeballs for hijacking my surfing experience.

That does suck. Are you using Firefox? It prevents almost all pop-ups.

Firefox can't block "pop unders" (if that's what it was ) i.e. a layer within the HTML code that contains the audio.

A pop-under is a new window that opens UNDER your browser. It can be blocked. The type of windows you are referring to are unblockable but would have disappeared when he went to a new site.

Yea, I'm using firefox, but the crafty little thing just snuck right under there. The pop under doesn't seem to be going this morning (maybe they were just testing it?) but if I see it again, I'll let you know.
