Default Should I Call Myself A Marketer Or A Copywriter? - 11-01-2006, 12:29 PM

I am putting the finishing touches on my freelance copywriting website. My copywriting services target a niche industry.

In your expert opinion, am I better off calling myself the ______ Industry Copywriter, or the ________ Industry Marketer?

I noticed John Carlton's e-newsletter is titled "Marketing Rebel Rant" not "Copywriting Rebel Rant."

I just don't want to scare off prospects who only need copywriting help, by calling myself a marketer first... and a copywriter second.

What do you all think I should do?

Thanks in advance for your time and input!

Nick Wright

dude, that's one side of the picture

john called his newsletter Marketing Rebel Rant because he didn't want to limit his writings to focus solely on copywriting but rather a more HOLISTIC view of the profession which is Marketing

on other hand, john has a course called kickass copywriting secrets of a marketing rebel and you guessed it, the entire manual is mainly on copywriting

why don't call yourself a Profits Strategist because the ultimate goal of copywriting/marketing is to BRING IN THE MONEY

Or try, "marketing writer," marketing copywriter," business writer," etc. Spell it out.

Lots of business people have no clue what copywriting is.

tvwriterguy: Good call.

wordsmith: "Profit Strategist"... has a nice ring to it.

AZ: Nice choices.

Very true. Most of my friends think I spend all day circling the little copyrite trademark... can be frustrating explaining what I do.

Thanks for your help all!

Smile What to call yourself.. - 11-01-2006, 06:53 PM

How about "Advertising Writer?"

I guess that if you repeat that to enough people,
a great deal of them will at least have an idea of
what you do.

It's quick and simple.

cool... proudad i love that title advertising writer but a funkier way to say it is "ad writer"

Jason Moffatt, not bad too.... but the average crowd won't understand...
it's just like calling yourself the Prince of Print... heck what does that mean?

Oh yeah, everybody contributing to The Copywriters Board knows exactly what "ad writer" means.

But until I began studying copywriting, I connected the word "ad" with what I now know as a display ad, not ad copy or a sales letter.

The point that I am trying to make Wordsmith, is that while I acknowledge that the word "ad" instead of "advertising" sounds more hip, it may not be as obvious to someone outside our industry what that means.

I intentionally used the word "advertising" rather than "ad" for that reason.
