My top 5:
  • 5. 85 Day Trading Secrets (because it's specific)
  • 4. Free Day Trading Ebook (because it's free)
[The first one, "6 top-secret" because it's specific, starts with a number]
  • 3. 17 Day Teading Secrets (same as #5, plus free video in ad)
  • 2. Free Day Trading Ebook (2nd one, starting with "explosive," again, because of specifics)
  • 1. Learn How Day Trading Can ... work in 85 (like the "hanger" technique, plus specific *and* freebies in ad)

Other secrets...

- Capitalize each word in your ad
- Try the URL without "www" and with the "http://" (works sometimes)
- Try the URL in a subdirectory (in the display URL) with a keyword
or topic relevant to the search. Such as...

DayTradingUniversity.com/FreeEbook
DayTradingUniversity.com/SampleVideo
DayTradingUniversity.com/85Tips

Or...

FreeEbook.DayTradingUniversity.com
SampleVideo.DayTradingUniversity.com
85Tips.DayTradingUniversity.com

Remember, adwords policy says, to be approvable, the display and destination URLs must be in the same domain. So long as that is the case, you should be OK to test any variation.

Here's an example. I just typed in "AdWords" into Google, and one ad had this:

Affiliate makes $4,680.00
How does Mike bank $4680 monthly?
He markets only one tiny ad. aff
www.compare-fun-jobs.com/$4680

- Here's a neat tip: same idea but works like crazy!
(I do it, and it increased my CTR by 77%.)

Use dynamic headlines by incliuding the keyword searched for.
How? Add these words in the ad...

{KeyWord:Your Default Title}

... Exactly as typed. KeyWord should appear like this since it tells Google to capitalize words and not sentence. (Capitalizing each word increases CTR.)

Simply change "your default title" to whatever you want. This is the title that shows up if the keyword doesn't precisely match, or is a variation, or is too long for the 25 character limit.

(I highly recommend Marty Foley's http://ConvertMoreTraffic.com/ for ideas like these. Great site!)

IŽd guess the one with FREE in the heading.

Although a better question might be - which ad. will deliver the right prospects?

Make sure to use FREE as a negative qualifier for the campaign to avoid the wrong crowd clicking.

Good Luck,

Peter

Yup, I agree with Peter. Free may have higher CTRs but poor sales conversion. I use negative qualifiers, too, but then add free in the add. So "free" pops up in the ad, even though they were not looking for it specifically. I also like to test variations (rather than "free'), such as sample, trial, test drive, complimentary, no charge, bonus, demo, etc.

I also found that if it's free contingent on a sale did have higher CTRs. For example, adding negative qualifiers in the ad (such as prices, among others) and/or conditions, such as "buy 1 get 1 free," "free bonuses (with order)," "free trial for qualified users," "$48 (includes free shipping)," etc.

I agree with Michel on all counts, and learned a couple of new tricks!

Great stuff Michel! Didn't know about the tag with default title, nor about the specific url destination trick... slick, and thanks!

I also agree with Peter and Michel regarding FREE, be very careful with this word as it can bring in a slough of costly tire kickers.

Another factor that seems to help is if you capitalize ALL your words - it is worth testing anyway.

I think "17 Day Trading Secrets", #13 will have the best CT, and perhaps # 4, "Hidden Day Trading Secret" will convert to sales the best. Which will be the best ROI? Don't know, I've been surprised more than once with Adwords, so you are doing well to test.

Good luck!

Tim

Michel posted a question at convertmoretraffic.com that sparked my interest to test dynamic keywords in the display URL.

Like Michel, I have used keywords in the display URL for quite some time now, with good results.

However, we were not sure if using dynamic keywords in the display URL would work. So I tested it and guess what... It works!

You need to enter the display URL like this:

mysite.com/{KeyWord}

You have to be careful that (like with other dynamic keywords) your copy/URL plus the keyword does not exceed the number of characters that you are allowed, however, beyond that it looks like it works!

Ya, that's amazing!

Eric, mind posting your mini "case study" ("Widgetman") with the gaphic?

Default Thanks Michel, others -- very helpful feedback.. - 07-22-2004, 08:45 AM

Thanks again so much Michel for the excellent tips -- very useful to know re dynamic keyword titles, plus the rationale for picking each of the adwords .. that's very insightful as always...

Interesting points re negative qualifiers for prospecting using 'free'..

I especially liked your tip about using URL-specific ads, eg
yourdomain.com/ebook

that's an ace idea -- appreciate that too!

Ken

I've been using all the very helpful techniques you outlined in your earlier copywriting for site Tours post all weekend long, as the model/outline (for the new copywriting university site, which is still under wraps, completely different look than the current 'placeholder' site) - it made a significant difference in the quality of the tour, eg before/after usage, order links tied to benefits ... world-class tips -- thanks again, Michel -- I think of you as the "go-to guy" for world class 'net copy work.

No problem...

Michel,

Because I use keywords in sub-domains in my Adwords campaigns, your question intrigued me enough to test it...

What I found:
Need {KeyWord}?
Get {KeyWord} for less!
Step-by-Step eBook Shows You How.
GrahamAdvantage.com/{KeyWord}

This actually worked... (I used "widgetman" as the KW...)

And it produced this:

Neat!

Thanks for asking the question, I would have never tested it otherwise!

I did not leave the ad live long enough for Google’s editors to look at it... I am not sure how they would view it, but from a programming standpoint it seems to work on their server.

I think you would have to be careful that (like with other dynamic keywords) your copy/URL plus the keyword does not exceed the number of characters that you are allowed, however, beyond that I think it will work.

I am going to set up a couple of test campaigns with my shorter keywords and test it this afternoon!

Eric
